I enjoy painting but have never made a penny out of it. I really would like to live off selling paintings but don't know what would sufficiently sell to make a living out of it. I need some kind of direction in art.

There are many ways and depends on your professionalism in art and how you advertise your artworks in media, how much beyond you can go extend to be successful. Being an artist, it needs financial investment when paint and sell paintings are needed, and I have a suggestion you can go get a part time job while you paint, that you need money to buy canvas, refills etc; as a novice of professionalism in art.

Truthfully, I won't suggest straightaway to you to join the media by a big leap to tv, newspaper, this whole media in one day is impossible, but with many art experiences, you can become one day in future.

There are ways:

- Join art collaboration during free time with a namecard (make one if you don't have) when someone wants to call you. It's best to check out art magazine to see any art competition to join, gaining art experiences first.

- If you have many paintings you should record them inside your file, which known as portfolio. It is a showcase of your works and It comes with an artist statement which talk about your works, when people want to buy your works and you can show them how much you done and paint. It's best to have a resume, and add experiences of joining gallery, awards and art contribution inside it. It gives a good image of yourself and show how active it is in the art world if the portfolio is good.

- It's best to take a look around the art gallery to understand more artist's work, and find out more anyone specialtize in the area you are currently focus on. It's best to research about art management: artist's studio management, use of internet for an artist, art exhibition management, financial management for an artist, publicity and promotion of an artist, legal issues & copyrights for an artist, documentation of art practice and careers in the arts. It helps you as a guide and give you tips more about the role of an artist. (One thing I learn about art is to be critical)

- You can go online to join member in art group to advertise your artworks, and email to your best friends, relatives or teachers to see your work. And it will be great if you create your own website with copyrights to show your artworks if you have a computer

-If you want to join group work, you can join group collaboration and make artworks to meet curator's requirements.

- When you want to do solo, you need to write gallery proposal what you intend to exhibit and write about it. You can get a loan from the bank to set up your own gallery, advertise it and give out invitation to people to come and see the opening ceremony when exhibiting artworks, namecard and a bowl (you may recieve contacts or responese from other people) inside. With a namecard, the person who like your work to be exhibited able to contact you to buy artworks easily. You can slowly pay bank by installment if compulsory. (You can ask bank for more details)

When the artworks shown vigoriously on line, join art members to show artworks in group and solo many times, more art competitions are join, you will be notice by the community by being active. Consistency of contribute in art activities and making artworks more, you are likely to be known in art world.

Get media exposure! The more people hear about you or see you in some type of media coverage, when shopping for art you might be the 1st thing that pops into their mind. Also flea markets or events where you can set up a booth. I once saw a man sell an entire truck of paintings in a few hours. People were buying those paintings as if he was in the desert selling gallons of water. Price didn't seem to matter! Everyone is fixing up their houses because o all those fix-my-space shows. But media coverage is the best tool. They can turn you into a star over nite!!!

I am a starving artist as well. I know if I really want to get my name out there, I need to start getting my work out there. Try selling at swap meets, ask if you can place them at local businesses. I would even try and find out which places sponsor local artists and go from there. How about local schools(secondary), they prbably have a list of connects as well.

People don't like to "pay" for art. Keep your day job as they say. Like any business you start small and grow. Figure out what people will buy and keep doing it. Good luck!

find something that hasn't been done...i think that's the toughest part of art altogether but also what will make one really stand out and flourish...in the end, creativity is priceless because not everyone has it

Advertising, manager, publicity, image, entertaining... I would say in these days talent is the less important thing here.

All these answers are good. Also, nurture a friend with money and have them host a show for you at their home, inviting their friends. It works for many of my colleagues.
