I would just like the opinions of other about how Hawaii should be like. I personally think a mix of both is good. But when you tear away natural beauty you cant get it back.

Mark Twain arrived in Honolulu aboard the steamer Ajax. Initially planning to stay one month in the islands, his visit extended to six months. His "Letters from Hawaii" form the work that he was hired to do for the Sacramento Union. He also wrote personal letters to his family during his visit and he is mentioned several times in the local Hawai`i paper, the Herald. Several years later he compiled his notes and letters and published a more polished chronicle in chapters 62 to 77 (LXII to LXXVII] of Roughing It)

His first description of the islands is one many of us recognize. It's what visitors look for out the right side of the plane as they prepare to land on O'ahu (or in Mark Twain's case - a steam ship).

"ON a certain bright morning the Islands hove in sight, lying low on the lonely sea, and everybody climbed to the upper deck to look. After two thousand miles of watery solitude the vision was a welcome one. As we approached, the imposing promontory of Diamond Head rose up out of the ocean its rugged front softened by the hazy distance, and presently the details of the land began to make themselves manifest: first the line of beach; then the plumed coaconut trees of the tropics; then cabins of the natives; then the white town of Honolulu, ..." (Roughing It Part 63-LXIII)

Today, the coconut trees are fewer, the cane fields are gone and the cabins of the natives have long been replaced by high rise hotels. Honolulu still remains brilliant under the Pacific sun, but a very different city than what Mark Twain saw. Diamond Head remains relatively untouched in it's natural state, perhaps our most famous landmark.

In summary, both natural beauty and modernization co-exist on these islands. Each one doggedly championed by our citizens, community and leaders. Arts, culture, and preservation of the environment is encouraged throughout our way of life while we, as responsible citizens, continue to seek solutions to social and economic issues. There is always room for improvement.

Peace from the Aloha State

I live in hawaii and it has it all. oahu city big island natural. Kona side big island is coming up and in the next few years they are building a huge building thing in kona with shops and sports and all that crap we don't need it they need to keep all that stuff on the mainland but, they already signed papers so i think it should stay natural.

no matter what...hawaii will always have its natural beauty. from its women to its customs. but the scenary is always going to be there, just take a drive to kaneohe on h-2 and you will see what i'm talking about. or drive to waianae and you will see the country. so no matter what you think of the city changing things...it won't.
