Well, I do believe that the serpent in Genesis was posessed by Satan.
But...
Genesis 3:14-15 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou [art] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
Romans 16:20 And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. Amen.
Jude 1:9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
Revelation 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
Revelation 20:1-2 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
From Genesis 3, we see that the serpent will be bruised under the feet of humanity. Romans 9 clearly seems to speak of the fulfillment of this, and the link between the two verses clearly identifies the serpent as Satan.
From Jude, we discover that the enemy of Michael the archangel (who some, including myself, believe to be Jesus himself in a pre-incarnate angelic form) is "the devil." In Revelation 12, however, we see that Michael fought against the "great dragon... that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan."
Finally, in Revelation 20, we see again "the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan."
To me, this clearly establishes that:
The serpent in the garden was Satan.
Satan made war on the angels of God in Heaven.
Satan is the enemy of God and Humanity.

I liek the answer above; also there is Ezekiel 28 to consider. Also, as far as Genesis 3 goes, how could this make sense if the serpent were not some other intelligent entity which was anti-God? How many could there be? It is the only logical extrapolation. Satan is not on God's council in Job 1; it merely states where Satan is. Satan is clearly evil, clearly an enemy, and clearly the goal was to get Job to go against the Lord; thus, a temptation to sin!

I think you are mistaken in your search for "Satan" in the Bible. He appears in many places other than Job. Most of what we know about Satan comes from Jesus' words. Since Jesus is God, we know that His words about Satan are reliable and 100% accurate. (By the way, the name "Satan" means "Adversary". Not exactly the person you put on the payroll.)
In the following verses, you will find that he opposes God in many ways and is bent on attacking and deceiving the people of God. Just read them and you will see.
Zechariah 3:1-2
Matthew 4:10
Mark 4:13-15
Luke 10:18
Luke 13:15-16
Luke 22:1-3
2 Corinthians 11:13-14
2 Thessalonians 2:9-10
1 Timothy 5:15
Revelation 2:13
Revelation 12:7-9 "And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down--that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him." (I'm posting this one in its entirety because this is precisely where the truth that Satan fell from heaven comes from.)

Fair enough; the Bible doesn't say specifically that the serpent was Satan. I'll agree with that. But, the rest of that is boloney.
Here's a quote from me:
"There is no evidence in the Old Testament to 'support the assertion' that Satan was 'part of the LORD's councel in heaven." God spoke to Satan. God proved his superiority over Satan. But nowhere in Job were Satan and God "chummy."

you found this statement? ah, so YOU are playing devil's advocate lol. very good.
Well, the serpent immage of satan is not just something that has been drilled into our heads because of the adam and eve story. Fact is, the devil was in the garden as a serpent.
Also, in the King James Verison, (you won't find it in NIV ) Isiah 4;11-13 says
"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:"
so there you go, yes although satan resides in the heavenly realm, it's not the same realm as God, and has been cut down.
BTW, back to my old statement the NIV refers to Lucifer as "morning star" which, strangeley in the book of revelations, is also used to refer to jesus... one of the reasons many people like the KJV better than NIV

It tells you in the New Testament where Satan rebelled and was cast out of heaven. I believe it was in Revelation 12:9. Though, many will argue that Revelation is not a good arguable source because it speaks of the future while others say that it speaks of the destruction of Jeruslem in A.D. 70.

" To open their eyes, [and] to turn [them] from darkness to light, and [from] the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me. " (Acts 26:18)
" And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with you. Amen. " (Rom. 16:20)

Well for starters...
How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: "I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High." (Isa 14.12-14)

Lucifer was the most beautiful angel of all and he was the only angel to accept the assignment from God which was to help humankind, his task was to lead people trough temptations to strengthen their faith and spirituality, so that is why he was then given the characteristic of evil. Yin and Yang two halves make a hole.
