YES!
My children and I love going as often as possible to the Home down the street!
Holidays are always busy there so we go on days when nobody else would go. ( We have been invited many times for the Holiday's to meet the families).
When we go we take Puppies and Kittens, Dogs and Cats ( not all at the same time).
The Administrator knows we are coming because I call her.
It is an awesome experience!
We love these Ladies and Gentlemen!
It breaks our hearts when somebody is not there when we come for a visit.
God Bless You and your Mother!

I don't currently have any family in a nursing home; however, I do sometimes work at one as a physical therapist. I like to think that I can make a difference in someone's life and even help some return to independent living. Nursing homes can be an eye opening experience; however, not all are bad. If you are really shocked by what you see, maybe there is a better one around that your mom may qualify for (insurance coverage) while she is recuperating. Good luck and I hope she returns home soon.

I'm a former healthcare provider. I've worked in some of the best and worst. Worst only because their weren't many family members who visited my patients. I was their family, along with the other nurses. Nursing homes can be heartbreaking, but visiting them from time to time can help put life back into prospective. The people there need a human connection. A family member with a smile to brighten their day. I wish for your mother a speedy recovery. I challenge you to revisit that nursing home when she is discharged. Visit that lady you saw alone in the corner, or the gentleman staring off into the distance. I am sure they would like a warm hearted hello or even just a smiling face. Good luck........

yes we visit several duing ministry work. There are bad ones, but there are very great ones, my father was in a VA home in MO and they were great, no one could have loved and cared for him more than some of the staff there.
Locally we have a Life Care home here and they are the best, thier assisted living is like up scale apartment living, and even thier home is perfectly clean any time I go, and does not have that hospital or sick old people smell. If I ever get down, I would want to be in a place like they have instead of being a bruden on my family.
I will keep you all in my prayers

I do, and on a regular basis. Actually, my work as a paramedic is what takes me there. I agree with you 100% that they are eye-openers. Some are better than others. However, if you have an elderly relative and are able to care for him/her at home, it is definitely in their best interest.
edit: laff, you are an @sshole and lonniegirl, alot of nursing homes have skilled physical therapists that come in an do rehab for people after they've had surgery or injuries from accidents. Sometimes patients conditions are such that they cannot be cared for at home. Don't be so quick to judge.

I worked in one as their IT person. Yes, they are an eye-opener. I wouldn't want to work as a nurse or have anything to do with the residents. It is a thankless job for the work they do. They take care of the residents and get screamed at by the resident's families. I have always wondered why the families get so uptight. Most of the nursing home workers take care of the residents very well and put up with a lot of abuse. If the families are so concerned about their loved one then they should take care of them themselves.

I use to go to the nursing home three times a week to visist my grandmother and my husbands grandmother. Now they both passed away and even though I still know a few older people living there I cannot bring myself to go back. I think I would start crying all over again. Maybe its selfish but that's how I feel.

If you work hand in hand with the staff, her stay will be pleasurable. I feel bad for those who are dumped into nursing home. I worked at one and I felt sad for some who never get to see their children. That is more detrimental to them! Your mom will do great with the therapy, keep her spirits up. She will be in my prayers.

Some of the most interesting stories I've heard form those in nursing homes. Good people, just need some people to talk to.

When I was in Second Grade, every tuesday we went to the nursing home down the block from the school to read to the patients. Looking back at it now, its really heartwarming. =) You have my prayers.
