would you agree that smaller dogs (chi, shih tzus, It grayhounds, etc) stress a little more ealily than bigger breeds?
i ask this because i just watched a neighbor girl try to get her 6month old chihuahua to walk in a harness on a leash. Ok, nothing wrong with this but ..... the girl (probably about 12 years old) was on one of those skateboards with a handle (i'm not hip, don't know the name :P) while dragging the dog behind her.
yes, i told her to take the dog inside. why? it's 95F here, a tad on the humid side, the dog's eyes were watering, and she (the dog) was panting pretty hard!
what do you think?

You did the right thing. It sounds like the girl didn't know better.

I alittle chihuahua cannot keep up with someone on a skateboard. The collar I am sure was choking the poor little dog, and yes, she should not have had it out like the in the heat and humidity. Chihuahua do stress out a lot more than bigger dogs. I have Chihuahuas myself. If you are a friend of the girl's parents, you might want to say something to them about this.

The smaller a dog is, the more delicate it is. A chi is really not a great pet for a 12 year old. I would suggest you speak to mom - nicely - and say you were a little concerned that the girl may not realize that her dog was overheating. Because they're small, they also dehydrate quicker than large dogs. They need to be watered frequently and not left out in the sun for too long.

I think what you did was right. Smaller dogs do get stressed easy, very easy. At 6mths, I doubt it would be trained already to walk on a leash anyway. I can't believe some people.
Now my 12 yr. old, she spoils her dog rotten, they go for a walk, I dont even know why she insisted on even buying a leash, she carries him the whole way. He is chi/jack,rus,terr, mix. more like a rag doll.
The parents of the girl in your question needs to be parents and teach their daughter HOW to be a pet owner.

the little dogs get tired easily because they are smaller. They can't run as long or hard and their little legs give out. She shouldn't be doing that with a wee little dog. Maybe she'd be better off with a german shepherd. They're nice dogs and athletic.

Oh definitely! They get sick easier, need more frequent meals, need more rest time, and shouldn't be taken for very long walks. The heat is bad especially if the dog was something with a flat face(pug shih tzu, bulldog).

I totally agree with you. Small dogs do tend to be a little more stressed than bigger dogs.

Yes, because small dogs (I have a dachshund) need to take a lot more strides than us. One of our steps is like five of theirs.
