Human lice have evolved to specifically live off human hosts. Lice cannot live long without a human host, although their eggs (nits) can remain viable for up to two weeks. Any lice infestation involves human to human contact or a fairly immediate transfer via comb, bedding, clothing, etc. Human lice do not live on other species and the lice that affect other species are not spread to humans. These lice have been specific to human beings for thousands of years, probably back to cavemen days. There is nothing cute about a lice infestation, as any parent who has had to deal with this problem can tell you!

I am an MD. Lice are "human specific" and they can only spread from human to human through a long daisy chain that goes back to the Roman Empire and beyond. In the U.S. they are generally spread in schools through contact between children, but anyone who has them can spread them. In my experience, they usually come in from our southern border with the 3rd world countries where they are endemic.

theyre transfered human to human or through clothing or bedding...usually its contact from ur kids to the dirty little hoodlums at school...or they could bring a hat they found on the side of the road home...ive also seen kids get lice from being around wild birds.

Lice are parasites that have been around forever. All animals have their own parasites. So I guess you could say they evolved along with their "host", or God made them.
