that you can lose the same amount ofcalories in the weight ligfting section as you can in the cardio section so... how many calories do you lose from doing 200 crunches in sets of 50? do you lose any at all?

Depending on how intense your wight lifting session is you may burn as many calories per session as a cardio workout. Weight training using methods like circuit training can be a very good cardio work out (Circuit training is when you do a series different lifts with very little rest in between; 10-12 rep range)

What your trainer may have been talking about is the long lasting effects of weight lifting. Your body uses more energy to maintain muscle as opposed to fat. So if you have more lean muscle you will burn more calories all the time as opposed to just when your working out. Cardio raises your metabolism for about 4 hours after your workout. Adding Lean muscle raises your metabolism All the time. So if you look at just the workout aspect then your cardio will most likely burn more cals then a weight lifting session. Building lean muscle allows you to burn more calories during your workout AND at rest. Building muscle is like turning up your body's internal furnace to burn calories and fat.

At best you could keep your heart rate up and lose a lot of calories hitting a high intensity circuit with little to no rest between exercises.

Your trainer is not wrong it is just that it will take a longer time to lose the calories in the weight room then in the cardio room.

The most effective way to lose calories is through cardio training.

your gym trainer is both right and wrong

if you are doing a weight training exercise to the same level of intensity as a cardio exercise (and vice versa!) the potential calorie expenditure is the same for the same given time

but doing 20 mins of crunches is nowhere near as intense as 20 min on a rower

the more muscle mass you use in any exercise the greater the likelihood of burning calories

and by the way dont focus on how many claories in any exercise instead get balanced exercise plan that includes resistance training and cardio work and go hard

aim for a body fat goal - this is a much better measure

good luck

You can if you do your strength trainging after your cardio. Just gotta keep your heart rate up. Keep moving. That's the best advice I can give. Good luck. Keep in mind trainers don't kow everything.

Good luck!
