Cats usually will not jump from a high place because it can cause serious injuries.
If a cat has to jump down like from a high wall, she will try and "walk" down as much of the wall as she can and then push herself off the wall before she reaches the ground.
This way she can avoid some of the hight and possible injuries.
But if a cat should not jump but fall from somewhere high, she uses her tail to adjust her bodies positon in the air (like you would be using your arms) and land on her feet.

First off, stop asking this so much.
Second off, they dont always land on their feet. Kittens dont always land upright, nor do cats.
Usually they sling their body in a motion that would help them land on all fours. if you ever record a cat leaping/falling from a high place watch it in slow motion and you will see how the cat contorts its body into an S shape and then rolls over completely.

They don't, I have a big fat boy who always falls off the computer desk and he never lands on his feet. He almost took the monitor out the other day, he weighs 20 lbs. From what I have seen, cats are rather clumbsy. THey fall out of the window and look around like, "I meant to do that."

I just read something on this the other day...the cat spreads its feet to cause "a parachute effect". It helps slow down the rate of a cat falling. It also said that a cat has more chances of survival from higher spots due to having more time to spread itself out. Please don't try this. Too many people try this out of curiosity! Why don't people see if a politician will land on their feet from high heights?!?

They land on their feet most of the time. That's because they are very flexible, and can use momentum to twist their body so that right as they're about to hit the ground, they're at the part of the twist where their feet are all facing groundward.

I saw a physics show that tackled this one. Cats have an uncanny sense of balance and somehow know how to turn their bodies as they fall so that they land on all fours like magic.

Whether or not a cat lands on his feet depends on the distance he falls and the surface he falls on.
