Hearing impairment can be heriditay; mine is. Other than that, overexposure to loud sounds can cause it. Actually, it can be cured with different devices nowadays. Bad hearing impairment can be treated with a cochlear implant. Moderate to severe can be treated with a middle ear implant. For more information go to the website below. There are lots of reasons for impared hearing. One of them is ear wax if the hearing loss is unilateral - obviously, this is reversible. However, the natural hearing loss that happens as we get older (called presbycusis) is not cureable. Also, a perforated tympanic membrane is usually not cureable. If we're talking about a child, you also have to keep in mind that you have to lose hearing in both ears in order to suffer from a learning disability. Other causes of hearing loss are acoustic neuromas, loud music (not reversible), otosclerosis (surgery), and chronic ear infections, among others. Please see a doctor that can perform formal tests to determine if your hearing loss is conductive or neuronal.

There are so many reasons, it's not even funny. How old are you? Are you in pain? I really wish you had elaborated a little more.... Most hearing losses are due to being older, or possibly even a wax build-up. Don't mess with this, as you do not want to have even worse problems later. If it is a wax build-up, that is severe enough to cause loss of hearing, it can also start infections. You CANNOT remove that amount of wax with a Q-tip. I would suggest seeing a doctor. Unless of course, you are just asking this out of curiosity?

Depends on the impairment. My brother is deaf from burnt nerves, which he got from a very high temp as a baby. Which can not be fixed. But you can prevent impairment, by listening to music at a lower volume and trying to avoid very loud noises.
