I think people should have to be at least 25 before they can enter the armed services.
But that would defeat the purpose, which is to take advantage of an inexperienced person's willingness to hyperconform and take whatever orders are given, in the name of patriotism, regardless of morality.

First if you decide to join the military congratulations!
The marines are the tougher better bunch too join, but it will be very hard, but in the end you will come out a better tougher person both mentally and physically, The air force is still a good option but it is a lil more cushy then the marines!
Second if you hare joining the military just so you can have somone pay for your way to go to collage, then i would recommend that you don't bother joining the military... go pay for it out of your own pocket!

You have to 17 to enlist with parental consent. Do go & get college hours while you wait. It's actually a dumb idea, in peace or war, to join the military for college money. That's absolutely retarded. If you want to join the military & you want your college paid for, check into your states national guard benefits. Here in Texas they give you a signing bonus depending on job, plus 100% tuiition reimbursement. Also, in you enlist from Texas and serve 6 months on active duty after training than all your tuition at Texas state universities is free for life. Every state has different benefits in that regard. If you're thinking GI Bill is free money for college, it's not. It's just like a 401k in that you pay into it for 2 years & then they match your contribution over the following two years. Then when you come out & start using it it doesn't pay for everything & you have a limited time to use it or lose it.
I'd tell you yes go enlist in the military, but do it for reasons like you love your country & feel a duty as a citizen to serve it & do your part. Don't do it fro free medical care & college money. Do check into the National Guard & Air National Guard with regards to benefits in your state. Do study hard & make a high ASVAB score so you can get a very cool job. And, do look into ROTC scholarships to pay for college & serve after (including possibilities in the guard/reserve). The military is a wonderful thing that will make you a better person more preared for life regardless of your specialty, but do your research & do it for the right reasons. When the time comes, look hard at the AF, they have MUCH higher quality of life standards & deployments if at all are 2-6 months for most jobs. Do lots of research, and good luck.

You need reasons to join and everyone does, what do you plan on getting out of it? Marines are tough and Air Force is more laid back, easiest branch. I like to call them the chair force :). Just don't go in if you don't have money for college, there are tons of scholarships out there and just apply for them..financial aid etc. Also look into the navy, but you'll be away from home most of the time and air force is very family-friendly if you plan to join.Plus the living conditions in the air force is the best I've heard.

Air Force or Marines? Wow that's a big difference....well I can tell you that the Air Force will be much less strenuous. You will have your choice of more technical type jobs. Most unlikely you'll ever fire a gun unless you are in basic, or a SP. It's more like a job. I and 2 of my sisters have been in the Air Force and I currently have a niece in right now. So I'm kind of partial.

That's a tough one. I was in the Navy, but it was during Peacetime, so now really is different. The military CAN be a good place to instill discipline and order, if the individual needs it. It helped me become more independent and less shy. You will get a college education, but at the same time, you literally have to sign your life away to the gov't. So, this should definitely be your decision alone. Check out the two branches you are interested in and see which one suits you better.

Consider the Air Force. It can be a "great place to start". You will learn a skill, discipline, respect and be offering something back to the nation that you are privileged to live in. I was told by a trusted person that the military can be some of the best and worst days of your life at the same time. It was true.

Hi. This is what I would do if I were you & I could do it all over again. Go to every branch & talk to them about what YOU wanna do. Then talk to people who have just recently gotten out.
This is kinda wrong, but its like car shopping. You need to shop around till you find one that suits you.
Me I joined the Army & I love what I do. I do not regret one day. The Military pays for school tutition & you are able to take courses on-line. As for the benifits, free medical & dental. They do take care of you believe it or not.
If you have any further questions, please hit me up on Yahoo messanger at donga_longa
Hope I was a little bit of help for you.

I would suggest that you think about it very carefully
I was going to sign up in 1988 when i was going to finish high school, back then they promised all this high tech training and money for college, and bs....but the money wasnt that good and the training claim was a lie, high tech infrantry was more like it...i walked out.
It might be hard but maybe a part time job and a community college might be better....then again, the military would teach you to be a very disciplined person which would certainly help you in anything you do....think about it very carefully

Yah ,alot of folks say you should join the air force ,but I say join the U.S.M.C why?, if your a man/woman you'll learn discipline, respect and learn to be motivated , yes the job requires you to learn combat skills and you may have to use them but you can sign up for the veap ( veterans educational assistance program) and practically have your college paid for by the government. Plus you'll have free medical and dental for life through the veterans association (VA)I have served in both the U.S.Navy & the U.S.M.C and have seen combat as a Marine and was nearly killed ,but am alive and kicking and would give my life to do it all over again.

The benefits are endless. The Marines isn't strictly about killing people, it teaches you how to be a better person mentally, emotionally, and physically. Sure, they teach you to kill but only at enemy soldiers, not at innocent people. I know a couple of people that went through the Marines and turned out to be decent people (my late uncle is one of them; he was a staff sgt. in WW2).
The Air Force is cool, too. Less strenuous than the Marines but you still need to be physically fit.
