Ali is generally regarded as the best defensive fighter of all time. In his youth he was virtually unhittable, but as he aged he wasnt as much of a defensive guru..more of that he had an incredible chin. He let Foreman pound him for 7 rounds before starting to take it to him. How many people could do that? NONE. As far as slippery fighter and very good runners,Pep was a good one. Sambu Kalambay, and believe it or not James Toney is a great defensive fighter,he uses angles to prevent his opponents from landing hard shots. That is why he has been so durable even as he moved up in weight. It all depends on what type of defense you are talking about. Some fighters are runners..like a Michael Nunn for instance. Others simply have a good chin and that is probably the best defense of all..lol. I would go with Ali,he had all of the tools. Some other notables,Ray Leonard,Howard Davis Jr.,Jimmy Young,Hopkins,Winky, etc. there have been so many good ones...I have left literally hundreds off the list. By the way, very good question.

I would have to say Bernard Hopkins though Winky Wright isnt far behind. They have had long careers because they never got hit. Bernard especially. What other middleweight could at 41 almost shut out a younger light heavyweight, surely not one that took a lot of hits. He was never to my knowledge even knocked down unless it was very early in his career. And he has fought the best from Roy Jones, Felix Trinidad, Jermaine Taylor, Oscar De La Hoya and Montell Griffith.
