Pet - they are dependent on you for life and most don't mind you having more than one ... you only have to handle your parents when something goes wrong
GFs - can take care of themselves and they do change BFs ... you have a lot more to answer for when something goes wrong
What would your GF choose?

id choose my pet... sure a girlfriend would love you a little different and it will be nicer and feel more fulfilling but at least when you wake up you know your pet will still be there ; )
