Call directly to the airline company, and don't give up.
Don't talk to the middle people, that's not going to help you at all.
Write a letter to the head of the company in China and America if the first suggestion doesnt work out.
They will tell you their rules, and generally most people will accept their loss.... however in reality it's no skin off their nose if you go back to America.
Call them every day if you have to, or ask to be put on standby every single day.
My open ticket expired, and I was able to extend it for another year for free, with some persistance.
Good luck, you will get home, don't worry about that.

An open ticket means that you don't specify a return date until you're ready to return. But if there are no seats available for the date you want, you have to select another date. Usually, the airline has a website where you can check for open dates, then make a reservation.
