Always carry a fishing towel! That way you can cover the cats horns while you wrestle the hook out. If you do get stung by a cat, get some of the slime off its belly and rub on the sting. It relieves it some.

Use a circle hook, don't set it when the fish bites. As the fish moves, the hook will slide into the corner of the mouth making it easy to remove. If you are a good fisherman, use a barbless hook, removes without tearing. Now if your question means how do you keep from hurting yourself, use a fishing glove and needlenose pliers. Both are available at sporting good stores.

Hold it at the belly side with the side fins between your first two fingers and under your thumb. Remove the hook by hand or with a pair of needlenose pliers.

Oh and the whiskers, they are harmless

on small cats you can palm the belly as described and that works well for the most part (can still get spurred though) i like the fishing towel idea. on larger cats 15lbs and above just hold that fatty down and work it loosebut watch out because their teeth are a bit rough to grab also.good luck

cut the line close to its mouth and leave the hook in. it will rust away soon. hooks are cheap. give it to the fish. just don't jerk on the line. you'll kill it like that.
