Being said thet you don't believe there is a God...what makes you even feel a need to be a good person when it really doesn't matter if your good or bad....do you go by what other people think is acceptable in society...you could just be bad without worrying about going to hell because in your minds it doesn't exist...what makes you want to do good?

I see that many of you say you have a natural built in love and goodness toward others but my question is what put that goodness into you...was it just there scientifically...by chance? Do you think that the majority of the population of the planet that is religous is crazy?

Freebird.....don't listen to all these other idiots.....I think this is one of the BEST questions I have ever seen on here. You know what I think? I think you struck a nerve with these people -- they know you are right and they don't want to be exposed for their hypocrisy. You have hit the nail on the head -- morals have to come from somewhere -- you don't just make them up out of thin air -- so, the atheist is either a hypocrit, or a liar.

And I've got to add this....I'm not sure who said it, but, Someone once said (and I paraphrase): "If I believe in God, and I am wrong, I have lost nothing. But if I do not believe in God, and I am wrong, I have lost everything." SOOO...why would you not believe????

Well, I don't consider myself an atheist - more agnostic. Why do I have to believe in God? There are some pretty good statements about crime, incest, etc. that didn't necessarily come from God but from some guy out in the desert. These statements (commandments) have helped me be a decent person. I don't go to church, and for the most part, I believe ALL religions to be a form of mind control for a self-serving purpose. However, there's no reason why I can't learn from these religions for my benefit. Think about it - people go to church to listen to a HUMAN (sinner) preach to them about how they should believe what he is telling them. Not only that, but preachers and publishers have translated the Bible/Koran so many times that nobody really has a clue what the meaning was in the first place. Therefore, for those people who wish to be controlled by others' thoughts other than their own common sense - so be it. Look at the Middle East. Enough said.

I don't need a higher power to dictate how I feel and treat others. There are many Christians in this world who are rude and go to jails for murder so what do you say to them? Jesus wasn't with them at the moment? They weren't actually feeling the "Holy Spirit"?

How stupid.

I treat others with kindness because I want to be treated with kindness. God did not make my body, my mother and father did. I developed a personality, I developed compassion, I developed a sense of how treating people a certain way makes them feel. I didn't need any help with that. I give hugs because I love to give hugs and most people like to receive them. I'll help a small child or an old person because my family has instilled morals that I have happily digested. I crack jokes along with my friends so we all smile. I'll cheer up a friend because it makes them happy and in turn, also makes me happy. Those who completely rely on the will of God are selling themselves short because then they know nothing but God. I suggest you open your mind to different people around you.

The reason I still feel a need to be a good person is because of morals. Morals do not have anything to with going to heaven or hell. It's about being a decent human being. It's about helping your fellow people and doing what you can to help them better their lives.

With you asking this, it makes me wonder: Are Christians only nice because they want to get into heaven? If so, what does that say about their character?

I always find it interesting when an atheist says, "I'm a good person and it has nothing to do with God." Of course, more often than not, thier very own definition of what a "good person" is comes directly from the values and ethics given to us in God's word (that's the Holy Bible for any atheists reading this remark).

Don't worry atheists, you won't always be an unbeliever. God does not believe in atheists.

Peace and grace to you all.

why do people think that it takes religion and god to be a good person? Why does it have to be told to a person to be good? It's natural to love and care for others. I'm an agnostic, but if I were an atheist I would still be a good person. I don't need a preacher to tell me how to be good, my parents made sure of that. i just get to be good with out the guilt. I don't have huge guilt if i say a "naughty" word...blimey I wish people would get over religion, it causes so much pain to so many people.

I want to lead a productive life for myself. I want to help others knowing that I will have made a positive difference in others' lives.

Who the hell assumed I would do all of this to get into "heaven"?

I do what I want for myself and for the betterment of society as a whole, even if that has to include you. I don't do it for some higher power I'm not sure exists.

This is the kind of question that just goes to show that Atheists or non-Christians can be better moral people than Christians can.

Christians claim that they are good people and do good things just because they want to go to Heaven. Atheists can be good people just for the sake of being a good person.

Do you really think you're better than them? If anything, you're being incredibly self-righteous.

wanting to be a good person has nothing to do with whether or not i believe in a god. i want to be a good person b/c it's just the right thing to do. you can be a good and decent person without believing in god. i treat other people like i want to be treated and just try to be a good person so i can make this world a better place. it's sad that there are people out there who are only living moral lives out of fear of going to hell.

Good and bad doesn't have anything to do with religion or god. Why are so many religious people bad then if they so care about God? Society establishes certain laws and we have to abide by them. God has nothing to do with goodness. It is common sense. Good is a feeling of satisfaction in helping others and the world around us.
