People in general get defensive when something that defines who they are (e.g. religion, fashion taste, etc.) is "attacked" by someone with a different point of view and belief system. Person A wears his favorite jacket to a party. Person B sees Person A and says, "What an ugly jacket!" Person A may start to "defend" his jacket and thus an argument may insue. I only say "may" because Person A could just ignore Person B's comment. We don't know how a person will react to a situation. Everyone is different.

Sometimes the person is contemplating the question for the first time, and is struggling to formulate an answer.

Dissenting views are pounded, because they conflict with what one believes. Some people think that if they "beat up" the dissenting view hard enough, and often enough, it will go away.

Other people "beat up" dissenting views for fun --- as an intellectual exercise. [ How well can you argue against your most cherished beliefs? ]

Sometimes the "beating" occurs because of self-doubt.

It is not self doubt.
I love God and the dissenting views tend to get very offensive.
My views were pounded first and I cannot help but pound back.

When you say "religious people" are defensive, you do realize that you are speaking of around 95% of the world population don't you.

Rash generality my friend, rash generality. If you're an athiest now, don't worry, you won't always be. God doesn't believe in athiests.

Peace.

Not all religious people are defensive. The ones that are defensive make it impossible for the rest of us. I think the reason they are so defensive is just plain ignorance and maybe blind hatred.

In my opinion it's because they are unable to accept views outside the christian faith. They can't handle being challenged. Because if they think outside the christian square then they aren't working with in their faith. I think that the best way to have a good strong faith is to question it and do it honestly. But you know I'm agnostic so what would I know hahahaha. Keep putting the questions out there...maybe it will get them thinking...

Because it feels like we get backed up into a corner most of the time. If someone calls you an idiot because of something you believe in and they don't even know you, would you get upset and defensive?

I don't pound anybody but let me say this, if I may.

Your eternity is too important to allow a shadow of a doubt.

Eternity is an extremely long time and we'll all spend it somewhere.

What is there to defend? Everyone has had doubts because no one is perfect or has all the answers. No one likes to be attacked with irrational innuendos regardless of religion or the absence of it.
