Please give me an answer on the following hypothetical situation:
A 16 year old girl lives in a bad household, the parents use any money they get to buy drugs. The girl has two younger siblings. a 4 year old and a 10 year old. They are here in the US, and do not recieve welfare because the parents have not signed up for it. They dont have any other family and no friends due to their parent's reckless behavior. The 16 year old goes to the grocery store and steals food to feed herself and siblings. Should she go to juvy? It is a crime to steal, but it is her first and only crime. Should she be called a criminal for life? There is no sympathy for crimnals right? What if she was older?

I am not making excuses for anyone, I am just looking for honest answers to this question.

So you are saying that she should not be branded a criminal for one crime that she commited? Some say that she should not, and would not be punished for it. What happened to enforcing the laws, no one being above the law, and breaking laws= criminals???

Honestly-she would go to a State home. And the other children too. In this case it might be better-although I don't like state homes.
Your asking if it was OK to break the law. No. And the court would see why. We are not unmerciful.
At that age she would not be a criminal for life. Maybe at 18. There are children who at a certain age who know better. If the child was 2-6-that would be different-they might not know better.
I'll leave your question at that.

It sounds to me like this girl needs to quit thinking that the world owes her everything for nothing. She's 16, she knows about CPS and various other types of places she can turn to to begin getting help and taking care of her own problems. It's easier to steal though.

She should be tossed in juvey for a night, she needs to learn that stealing is hardly ever the answer, she's taking a meal out of someone else's mouth to put in her own. She could have walked into any church and asked for some help. Then she should be placed in a foster home with her siblings and her parents should be jailed. She shouldn't be a criminal for life, she wouldn't be, she's 16. Sympathy is nice to talk about, but how about fairness? What makes her so special that she should get away with her crime scott free when other have spent time in jail for the same crime? That's not fair.

Or course is she were an illegal alien who was committing such crimes as violating the sovereignty of another nation, tax fraud, identity theft, and lord knows how many other VERY serious crimes then she should be deported straight back to her homeland. Possibly after spending a few year in prison, depending on her crimes.

Seriously, when you start letting poor bums off the street break into your home whenever they please, eat your food, sleep in your bed, and take whatever they want from you without a single complaint you won't be a hypocrite for even posting this hypothetical.

I am not without sympathy for the girl. But, she is 16. She could work, and I would certainly expect she would do so if she was older. She could talk to a teacher about her problem, who most likely would contact child protective services. Stealing should not be the first choice here. If she's steals, she must realize that in getting caught there will be consequences no matter what your motive. Will the jury likely go easier on her? Yes. When we do a deed, no matter how honorable the motive, we know of the consequences, and we must accept them as a matter of course.

i think people should show more humanity just like every judge should take into consideration what a person has been through before giving any sentence . in my opinion that girl needs to be help and has only been a victim of the circumstances , any person would do the same not matter how many times that person says he would not do it . nobody is perfect and that is a fact .
here an example so u can see not every person is as close minded as the ones answering your question ( this people have an agenda which has clearly fail ):

I've known people in that exact situation. It's a crime but for every rule there is a loophole, anyone who disagrees with that has not been watching CNN. And no she should not be punished the life which she was forced to live is punishment enough.

Yes it is justified. Most dogs in this country live better than that. I would have no choice but to do that if I were in that situation. Seems like illegals are not worthy of such humanity. People are so selfish in this country. We are just out for Number 1. We feel so entitled because we were born in this country, instead of being grateful.

if law enforcement were made aware of her family situation, she most likely would not get a serious punishment. The department of family and children's services need to be aware of the situation. the parents are endangering the children, physically and emotionally. She needs to be in contact with DCF to receive counseling, foster care or other family services meant to help precisely those children in her situation.

Honestly, if it was that bad, she could go through other channles. Talk to a teacher or human services.

But sence she got caught, she would most likley be removed from her parents custody, and her along with hersibs would be put under foster care, I could see no charges sticking in this case .

She was in a hard situation and did what she must to survive. At least she wasn't selling her @ss. What she did is still illegal. Juvy might actually be a good thing for her, as odd as that sounds.
