i had an assignment on Tourettes at uni, I'm not sure that an academic paper would help, but my suggestion is like what someone else said, go to the Tourette Association in your state and get help from there...Tourettes is like OCD (which I suffer from) it takes over and makes you feel like a freak, which your not and I'm not. so go to the professionals...I have also found that laughing at myself has helped.

Good luck xxx

I'm pretty sure I have Tourette Syndrome, but I've never been diagnosed. It's not that serious in my case and I've learned to live with it. It was a relief to find out what it is though, I only found out a year ago, at age 23. Before that I wondered what was wrong with me, why I had those strange tics.

I've heard that medicines help some people and that symptoms often decrease with age. I'm afraid I don't know of any magic solution though.

I don't have Tourette's, but used to work with someone who did. I just want to say, try not to let it stop you from doing anything you might want to do. The gentleman with whom I worked was a Correction Officer (and still might be) at a large prison facility. Despite muscle tics and profane outbursts, the inmates were, for the most part, pretty accepting. Also, I'd like to note that this guy, for some reason unknown to me, was able to keep his muscles under control when qualifying on the firing range. He didn't let Tourette's stop him.

Are you sure you were diagnosed correctly? The reason I ask is because a friend was diagnosed with tourettes when he was a child and medicated all those years. Then at 22 years of age his shrink decided he didn't really have tourettes. I remember him at emergency several times from adverse reactions to medications.

I suspect you're going to end up with a lot of cut and pasted answers from Wikipedia to that...

The best thing to do is to visit the Tourette's Syndrome Associations site - they can tell you all you need, and put you in touch with people.

I had a scary experience with a guy with Tourette Syndrome.

He pulled a knife on me.

In a park.

On a sunday.

It wasn't much fun.

I guess my advice to you is...don't do that.
