If this is your first ime riding, then YES you WILL be sore, asuming your rideing for half an hour or more. It takes time and practice to learn how to ride without bouncing, and it takes time to build up your muscles so that you don't get sore. Stretch before hand, and stretch after.
If you will be riding western, (does the saddle have a horn?) you can wear comfortable jeans. Not tight, and not super low hip huggers. you should be able to stand next to a chair while whearing you pants and put your foot comfortably on the seat. If you can't you probably won't be comfortable on the horse. Try a different pair of pants. You could also wear lighter pants, like stretch pants or the kind you wear around the house that resemble pajama bottoms if you don't have any suitable jeans or will be in an english saddle. (I doubt it, but if your not going on a trail ride and are taking a lesson it's possible. If you live in England, it's probable) Don't wear a thong. You will regret it. wear breifs, preferably cotton. If that won't work, the boy cut ones might me okay.
Wear boots with a low heel if you have them. You can probably get away with sneakers (call and ask) but if you plan on riding alot, plan on getting decent boots soon. Never, ever wear sandals, flipflops, or open toed shoes.
Oh, and if you have long hair, put it in a low ponytail so it fits comfortably under your helmet. And yes you should wear a helmet. The chance of somthing actuly going wrong is slim if where you re going is a well- run place. The chance is greater at a facility that is more careless. But even so, there is always the chance of somthing happening. A horse could spook, or an unfriendly person coud come out of the woodsand make the horse spook. Or, you loose your balence and fall at a trot. (I haven't seen this happen on the trail, but I have seen beginers fall off for apparently so reason in the arena. There's a 99.99% chance that nothing bad will happen. But if it does you'll want that helmet. I have literally seen helmets save peoples' lives. its like a seat belt in the car, you don't expect to crash, you wear the seat belt in case you do.

if this is your first time riding, YES, you will have a sore bottom. in order for you to "ride properly" as to not have a sore bottom, you need to be experienced and accustomed to riding often.
the reason your bottom will be sore is because when you ride horseback, you use muscles in your body that you don't normally use or may have never used. the insides of your thighs and your bottom with be quite sore.
you can minimize the soreness though. first, stretch out well before you begin riding. afterward, stretch again and walk around for five or ten minutes. don't just hop off and get into your car and go home. treat it like any other sport, do a proper warm-up and cool down with your body. if you find you are sore later that night or the next day, take a hot bath to soothe the muscles and, again, stretch some more! if you plan to keep riding regularly, then you won't get sore every time after your body gets used to it. riding horses is very physical, although many people think it's just sitting on a horse. it's like starting any work-out or excercise; you'll get sore at first!
lastly, jeans are OK if they are really comfortable. I don't ride in jeans because the inner seams press into my legs and it drives me nuts. lighter pants would be more comfortable, especially if it is hot. and i'd skip the thong...bad idea.
good luck and enjoy!

Definately jeans--sweatpants are hotter and shorts sometimes allow your legs to rub against a hot saddle. I would suggest no thong--it would just HURT! As for the butt being sore, if you're riding a gaited horse, such as a Paso Fino (I own one--they are AMAZING), your butt won't be sore at all, since they are so smooth. If you're riding a bouncy horse, such as a Quarter Horse, depending on how long you ride, your butt could be a little sore afterwards, although I've never had it be bad enough to need Tylenol or anything like that. Plus, you probably won't be trotting the whole time, so just sit back, let your horse walk sometimes, and enjoy the ride!

Yes wear jeans- Wear comfortable shoes preferrably boots- no flip flops or sandals- DO NOT wear a thong- wear cotton underwear that covers your whole butt. Yyour butt will not be sore if you ride properly- use your legs and don't just sit on the saddle.
Be prepared to be sore all over if you are not used to riding at all.
Take Tylenol or Advil before and after your ride to ease your stiffness.
HAVE FUN- horse back riding is the best.

Are you female? You should wear a good supportive bra, because there will be bouncing and jiggling. And depending on how long you ride, you'll probably have a sore bottom and sore thighs. It's because you aren't used to riding. You better wear jeans.

sore muscles come from inexperience. and not necessarily from the motion. it is because your muscles do not yet know how to counterbalance the horses movement. i have gone as long as 6 months out of the saddle and i never have had any problems with soreness afterwards. wear comfy jeans and as to your under wear it is up to you wethere you wear a thong or not or if you even wear underwear at all. Some English riders will either wear a thong or not underwear at all to get rid of panty lines under their breeches.

jeans yes, thong, maybe not, if the horse trots stand up a bit in the stirrups. more likely your inner thighs will feel the strain as you will be clamping onto the horse while you ride. it is generally no big deal, though, just take a couple ibuprofen or tylenol the next day if necessary. focus on having fun!
