Grilled Cheese with bacon and tomato:
The key is great cheese that melts nicely: I lke Cabot Cheddar and a good whole wheat or Jewish Rye for the bread. All you really need to do is melt a table spoon of butter on low heat and saute each side for about 4 minutes in a non stick pan. The bacon and tomato is optional. (make sure the bacon is fresh and cooked ahead of time.) Beefsteak Tomatoes work well

Try making it with multiple cheeses. I love the three cheese one with cheddar, colby jack, and American cheese. (you can mix and match the cheeses to try different combinations)
Sometimes, I just make a plain one and dip it in ketchup. Try that sometime!
I also like to dip it in tomato soup.
Try turkey since the ham was alright. (If you like turkey, that is.)
Try using mayo or miracle whip instead of butter on the side you grill.
Just some options!

A great grilled cheese sandwich from bottom to top, consists of a slice of bread, a layer of cheddar cheese, a mound of carmelized onions, another layer of cheddar cheese, topped with another slice of bread. (Throw in some ham too)
Grill it with butter and dip it in tomato soup.

Slice up some onion, sautee it and add it to the cheese slices before you grill. You can also do the same with bacon slices.

when you spread the butter on the bread sprinkle on alittle lawrys seasoning salt, or some garlic salt, and use white cheese instead of yellow cheese, and if you put ham in it grill the ham in the pan first

Adding crumbled bacon is good. Also adding some grilled onions and peppers and mushrooms are yummy.
Also - this is sort of weird, but crushed potato chips is really good.

Slide a thin peppered slice of tomato between the two slices of cheese (yes, two) then grill it. Yum.

I think this is a really great question. Very informative answers. I never thought about having it with tomatoes or tomato soup. I have to try it. Bacon, tomato and oregano together with the sandwich sounds good in my opinion...I'm hungry now!!
