From an ex-smoker - a very good idea, when I go out these days my clothes and jacket stinks and my voice is very croaky the next day and I have given up a few years ago. I gave up for a reason so think a ban is fantastic, the smokers should either have an outside area or small room in which to smoke. In South Africa some restaurants are divided into smoking and non-smoking with a glassed in part for smokers but I think that will come to an end soon. So to the person who talked about emigrating, even our "third world" countries are beginning to see the light. You could always go and live in France though where everyone smokes.

In some resepcts it's good and bad there's pro's and con's for everything i.e. non smokers will be able to go to the pubs and clubs and not have to worry about inhaling others smoke but it's sort of a kick in the teeth for smokers because they wont be able to enjoy the pub/club experience with having to go outside plus the pub/club industry will suffer some big losses due to the fact the majority of the population are smokers and for example wont go to night clubs because they might have to repay to get back into the club. What the Government haven't outlined is how they are going to inforce the law and check that pubs/clubs are following the guidelines. Plus I haven't heard what pubs/clubs are going to do i.e. a smoking area.

I gave up smoking about 6 months ago after partaking in this vice since I was 15, i'm now 38 (I did have a 5 year gap from smoking to have my kids) but even if I still smoked, a ban wouldn't bother me that much especially in areas where kids are allowed and food is served. When I started again after having my girls I never smoked in the house again I always went outside so why can't smokers just do that cos that way it doesn't linger and interfere with non-smokers

I work in a place that was established in 1920,in west Hollywood CA.Barneys Beanery,a Hollywood landmark, known for a rough and tumble crowd. When the no smoking law took affect in the 1990's there was alot of grumbling, but after a while our smoking patrons just took it onto the patio.I still breathe in that smoke every day,the doors are open, plus I live in L.A.
So whats a person to do?Save the whales?Dolphins?Wolves?Live and let live because thats all you really have in your control.I think it should be up to the owner of the establishment whether or not to allow smoking. If you don't like the policy find someplace else to go just like you would if the food was bad or the server was rude,it's a big planet.......

First off, I am a NON-SMOKER.

Bad thing... they did that in Washington within the last year. Many bars and clubs have really suffered heavy losses due to it. Some "Landmark" taverns and businesses have been forced to close do to drop in sales of up to 70% or more.

There was NOTHING preventing non-smokers from starting their own smoke free bars and clubs. Some people did. Those that did didn't get much traffic at all. Now that they ALL are smoke free, they ALL are suffering from less traffic. Most people who smoke would rather drink and smoke at home then go to a bar and have to go outside and away from the building just to light up.

They also banned smoking in ALL public buildings, even those with special rooms built in. My work had a seperate break room for smokers complete with their own air vents and circulations systems to prevent the smoke from getting outside of the room. They had to close that too so now those employees are forced to go outside to smoke which makes the outside look really trashy with people standing around smoking.

Personally its good because i hate the smell of smoke and hate it on my clothes as I am a non smoker.

I do think a very small number of pubs should be allowed to cater for people who do smoke as a total ban is going to cause a bit of chaos. They will all be outside by the doorways of the non smoking pubs instead

It's terrible. Why should smokers be forced to freeze outside so they can smoke a cigarette they paid taxes on? Pubs are meant to be places of relaxation. Why is it smokers get lectured for their life choice but no one goes up to obese people and yell at them? Obesity causes the same health problems as smoking plus about eighty others. Smokers support the economy and the tobacco farmers and I don't care if the "truth" commercials try and portray the tobacco companies as merchants of death, they use the same marketing tactics as every other American business.

BAD There should be smoking and non smoking places that way we all have a choice over which type of venue we want to go to.
You don't want to breath smoke, don't go to the clubs etc people can smoke in and vice versa.
You can't smoke legally till you're an adult so why should people be told where they can smoke

Its already banned here in Scotland and so far it appears to be going ok. However, you do have a lot of people stnading outside smoking now! But inside it does feel better, my eyes dont nip (I wear lenses) and dont come home feeling like Ive smoked 20 fags and your hair and clothes dont stink either! Which as an ex-smoker (stopped 18 months ago) I think is fab!!!

Bad. Smoking and drinking go together. Even people that don't smoke, light up at bars. These anti-smokers say smoking is bad. Well, so is eating a hamburger...so is drinking. People that don't want smoking in bars, should...BUY THEIR OWN BAR and make it a rule. The government should not be the one to say what to do.
