A recent Horizon TV programme here in the UK reported that living organisms exposed to relatively low level radiation in the Chernobyl fallout area (but much higher than average background levels) showed no significant increase in cancer - In fact low level radiation appears to activate genes which are involved with repair of genetic material, thus providing a protective effect.

If this is the case, then aren't we actually safer doing some moderate sunbathing without sunscreen, than slapping on the sunscreen and staying out for hours on end? It seems to me that the increase in skin cancer in many parts of the world in recent years coincides with an increase in the use of sunscreen. Certainly, no sunscreen manufacturer claims that their products prevent or even limit skin cancer, because there's no evidence that they do. It may well be safer not to use the stuff, and let your skin protect itself naturally instead.

Any expert opinions welcome...

Actually you are correct. Moderate sun is good for you since the suns rays creat Vitamin D in your skin. The problem is most people think they can stay out longer since they have sun screen on. Most people don't put on enough sun screen and reapply when needed so they more often then not get melanomia. Moderatetion is the key to allmost everything.

Your last sentence indicates that you may be the professional, so why bother asking the question? My brother died 14 years ago next week from malignant melanoma--that in itself, plus the hours of subsequent research on my part, would qualify me as a professional. So I'll tell you this for your own benefit: unless you like to play Russian Roullette with the mightiest carcinogenic fireball in our universe, go ahead and forget about the sunscreen! If you enjoy this life, however, and you are the least bit fair-skinned, and you would like to GO ON enjoying this life, do what scientists have been saying for years, and continue with the sunscreen! The yearly rise in skin cancer cases since we have discovered the deterioration in our ozone level is staggering in both magnitude and percentage. And besides clothing and sunscreen, the only protection we have against skin cancer is our brain, and our body's own chemical tendency to fight off the many risks! Do you want to be absolutely sure? It's not a possibility--your only hope is the use of sunscreen and twice-a-year visits to your dermatologist! Make it necessary--what happened to my brother should NEVER happen to anyone!!

When I was young, with 4 siblings, my mother divided all the M & M's by color. I was convinced my 'favorite' was red.
Then, red dye #6 was found to be carcenogenic. I never felt the same again.
Since then, M & M's have added the color blue. Is it safe? I know of no safe food, that is blue (except for blue-berry's).
I will never eat a blue M & M, I won't, I won't I won't !

Is my attitude 'natural', 'childish', or should we ever believe what is printed on a product label?

Instead of sunscreen use hamsters to cover you up all over.
