I will give you an artists perspective, my father worked as a photographer for many decades. A good photographer can make even a relatively ordinary person look ravishing.
I first look for fashon which is not the photographic aspect. Then lighting is very important there should be a good range of lighting from dark to light in the same picture because that gives more depth to the photo; in addition concentrate on poses that give at least some hint of depth, make the posses hint at the dynamic, or give character to your posses.
Some of the best model shots are found in good photography magazines.

Lots of things... sunsets, storms and lightning, rainbows, flowers... lots of flowers, landscapes, eclipses. I used to work for a major photo company so I had to take lots of colorful pics that also showed off the features of the product.
However, I got my start shooting candids. I like nothing better because it is real, raw, and usually intriguing. It's more fun because it is a hunt instead of a set-up. In my opinion, model photography is also candid photography because the best shots catch the model between poses... when the model forgets the camera and is lost in the moment. Perhaps that is the key to being a good model -- knowing when to get lost. :-)

People look for nice poses and expressions.
If you would like a personal portfolio site please contact me and I will set you on up for free. I can design you a fully personalised flash website with as much or little information and then host it for you. This site can contain a gallery of your photos, personal information, list of work, contact details, etc or if you prefer just a couple of photos and nothing else. It can be password protected and all images will be protected as is humanly possible, or the photos can be available to download.
Examples of work can be provided on request. Just message me here if you want, I am a professional website designer but have lots of free time (and enough money) so I am currently doing free sites for small bands, small artist etc, basically anyone who could not afford them otherwise. I have my own hosting server so can offer hosting servers or you can host the site yourselves. No images sent to me will be used for anything other than your site and I will not give anyone your detail or link to the site. You will have complete control and the site can be removed or changed at any time. This is not a scam and I will design a site for FREE, I do not need the money, and enjoy working. If you do want it message me you can tell me what you want and how you want it done and I will help.

when I see an ad in a magazine I look straight at the eyes. If your eyes are dull....even if the rest of you is posed beautifully....the picture doesn't catch me. You have to connect with the person looking at the photograph...as if they are looking straight at you, not at a picture. Its all about the eyes.

I like classic picture with classy clothes. not necessarily fancy formal wear but just classic cuts/fits. NOTHING trendy. A good picture is one that is not dated.
