i know using a pesticide is not safe, others say mayo, vinegar, and other home remedies doesn't work. is there anyone out there that has tried something and it worked and got rid of the head lice and didn't have to spend alot of money on buying stuff, something simple and effective.

my girlfriend's daughter had it bad and couldn't get rid of it so she something like green tree oil from the health food store she said she didn't like the smell but it got rid of it.

Remember to wash all bedding in hot water and dry throw pillows in dryer bag up stuffed animals or throw in dryer as well Vaccum everything.

While working at a daycare years ago I got it from one of the kids. they go after clean healthy hair. my hair was waist length and I never used anything in it but shampoo and conditioner. I used nix then took a bunch of vaseline and worked it in. put wrapped plastic wrap around my head to trap in the heat. cleaned the entire house then rewashed my hair. I kept using the little comb on to get rid of everything. the vaseline and comb worked better than the nix. after that while working with the kids I used gel or hairspray everyday. sounds crazy but I wasn't about to get those things again. I had one parent who I had repeatedly sent their child home actually try sending their child to the daycare with the stuff still in their hair. I of course chewed them out and told them they were to take him home and wash it out before it blinded the poor baby. (2yrs old) sometimes you just got to wonder.
Good luck on getting rid of those buggers!

You need a lice shampoo, and follow the directions. It's a lot of work, but you'll need to comb every inch of the hair with the little comb that comes with the shampoo. If you leave even one egg behind, it can hatch and you'll have to start all over. You also need to wash all blankets, pillows, clothes, your couch, and throw away all brushes, combs and hair accessories. You should also buy the lice spray and treat your carpet and everything in your house. Lice are really gross, but it doesn't mean you have to be gross to catch them. They actually bite and drink blood so you definately don't want to let them live with you! It's a long process, but it really has to be done thoroughly or they'll keep coming back.

Go ahead and get the lice treatment that is over the counter at most pharmacies (or Wall-Mart)--the pesticide is not potent enough to harm even the youngest child. A good preventative is to use tea tree shampoo (found at health food stores and some discount stores). If you can't find tea tree shampoo, the shampoos used to treat seborrheic dermatitis also discourage head lice.

There are several shampoos you can buy that will get rid of lice. You can also comb the hair yourself and get all of the nits out but it takes a very long time.

Quail shampoo (may have another medical name) from your doc. Or vaseline or some type of cooking oil (my cousin couldn't handle chemicals so she tried this one) on you hair coated VERY well...then cover it with a shower cap and keep it on for like 2 or 3 days....takes a long time but worked for her...make sure to WASH everything in lysol cleaner too...
