There is such a thing as certification, and there are grooming schools. However a license and/or certification is not required to be a groomer - just experience (at least in most states, anyway.) I, too, plan to become a professional groomer, but have chosen to take a course at a school near my home so I can learn as much as I possibly can and get certified - even though I have some grooming experience from working at a kennel. There are so many breed specific cuts to learn! And the certificate will look nice on the wall in my shop! Good luck to you.

There are grooming schools that you can go to, and you can learn by working with a groomer.

My sister started working at petsmart as a dog bather, then she expressed her desire to go to grooming school and they sent her and paid for it. she is now a certified dog groomer, she has to work for petsmart for 2 years to pay off her tuition but after that she can go where ever she wants to.

You know, I was wondering the same thing. I went to a vocational school and learned grooming there. So I don't know if you need a license.
