Or is it less okay to joke about one more than the other?

I think that with comedy, anything goes. I'm not necessarily going to laugh at every joke and enjoy it, but I won't say "Haha, a joke against Jesus, but no, you can't joke about the holocaust, cause I'm Jewish!".

I don't believe in censorship, double standards, or being hypocritical.

This isn't about religion, it's about contradicting yourself and double standards. I don't mean personally badmouthing Jews or Jesus, I just mean harmless jokes.

A Jesus crucifixion joke is a joke about one man who died about 2000 years ago. It is also a joke about a man who symbolizes a religion. You would be more likely to offend a Christian than you would a direct descendent of Jesus. A joke about the crucifixion of Jesus is in the same vein as a Prophet Mahomet caricature: it offends the religion through its symbol more than it offends the memory of the person targeted by the joke.

A joke about the Holocaust is also a joke about a symbol associated with a religion. Your joke could offend religious Jews. But in 2006, some sixty years after the Holocaust, you would also likely offend a handful of survivors and hundreds of thousands of their descendents and millions who feel more or less directly connected to the memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

To sum up, a joke about the crucifixion of Jesus is a joke about one man's torture and death approx 2000 years ago; and about a religious symbol. A joke about the Holocaust of the Jews is a joke about approx 6,000,000 men's, women's, and children's torture and death approx 60 years ago; and about a religious symbol.

If the joke is good, I'll laugh.

I find any joke funny unless it's purpose is to hurt. Most jokes that seem hateful (Jesus jokes, many Holocaust jokes, Racism jokes) in my view are funny because they satirize hate... When i tell a joke like this or listen to someone tell one its funny to me not because i am hateful... its funny because its adding levity to something so serious. It's nice to be able to loosen up about serious things every once in a while... people with no sense of humor become extremists.

By the way, I'm from a Jewish family and i still find many Holocaust jokes funny. People need to loosen up, its called a joke for a reason.

I don't have a moral problem with neither of them, but if at all- the Holocaust seems less legitimate as far as I'm concerned.
first of all- because I'm Jewish; jokes about Jesus are fine by me (it doesn't mean I disrespect Christians! I have no problem with Jewish jokes either).
Secondly- I know too many people that have survived the Holocaust and they are extremely sensitive about it, as they should.

In the sense that nothing is off limits to comedic interpretation, yes they should be treated the same.

In the sense that one was the genocide of 11 million innocent people for no reason other than certain unfortunate demographic characteristics, and the other was some guy getting nailed to a cross because he thought he was god, then no, they're completely different. It's not my fault that billions of people happen to believe that one of them is off limits. To me, it's just some guy getting whacked. BFD. The Holocaust is exponentially more sensitive a subject, but it still shouldn't be off limits to comedy.

It seems that we all want to be able to joke about everything in life - at least have a sense of humor about it. But I think that question is - what do you believe? Are you willing to compromise that for the sake of your sense of humor? What about character, conviction and compassion? Without these, we would not be willing to help, save, or love one another.

It's worse, because Jesus is the God who created you and the holocaust is about a pile of ashes.
