Painting your roof is a very economical way to "freshen up" your roof's appearance. It will also add several years of life to an existing roof. Use a high quality ACRYLIC semi-gloss for the best results. The texture in your shingles will make it look like you have used several different colors and if you have dimensional shingles this will even further accent your roof. DO NOT USE OIL BASED PAINT OF PRESSURE WASH YOUR ROOF. The solvents in oil based paint will damage the asphalt and the pressure washer will loosen the aggregate on the shingles and shorten the life of the roof. Use a hose and a very soft broom to clean your roof, allow to dry and then paint it with a roller or be very careful with a sprayer. The Seal-Krete company makes a clear primer called Seal Krete that would be a good undercoat for added protection.

Yes you can paint an asphalt shingled roof but you shouldn't. The paint will rot your roof as it deteriorates. If you must paint it, use an exterior oil based paint. Another problem is that unless you want to spend hundreds of hours painting on that texture with all the grooves and over lays, you would have to use a sprayer and the overspray would speckle the neighborhood. It's really not a good idea.

Before attempting to paint shingles I would suggest a cleaner and a low power pressure washer.
