Just recently, we had a woman come in and openly tell us all about this rather disgusting surgery she had. After she left, we talked a bit about that and how open people can be sometimes. But other than that, not a whole lot... If you are busy enough, you shouldn't have time to worry about the superficial stuff like that...

I used to work for Claire's, and didn't really talk about the customer's looks, as much as the crazy stuff they did.
Like the time I had to kick out a teenaged couple who were hot and heavy making out (it's a kid store for pete's sake), or the treanvestite whose ears I pierced (ok, I did talk about his/her look - not a very pretty female).
The best was when I was going to pierce this little baby's ears for this woman who was from Chile. I was trying to get the marks where the earrings would go even, but the baby (about 7 mos) kept trying to grab the marker. So I asked the woman if the baby had a bottle or something to keep her occupied and the woman whips out her boob to start breastfeeding her - not too comfortable or convinient for me (disclaimer, I have no problem w/women breastfeeding in public, but come on)

Retail just naturally means contact with all sorts of people. And some really are strange enough to talk about. But you need to be careful not to let it become a habit. Keep it up, and after awhile, everyone will seem weird, strange, freaky, etc. And people are sensitive -- they can tell if you're sizing them up, waiting for them to go out the door so you can start yukking it up. Just remember the old "do unto others," because you sure wouldn't like it if they "did unto you!"

Not so much about how they look or dress, but we do alot about some of the crazy things people can say. Like... "How many dounts are in a dozen." I cant tell you how many times that happens. Another good one is, " If this is the shirt on sale for $10.88 how much is it?" Or the people that come in to order a birthday cake for the childs birthday and dont know how to spell there own childs name or how old they are. We had a lady order a wedding cake for her OWN wedding and ordered it on the wrong day. We had a lady buy a goldfish and it died, so she put it in a baggie and carried it in her purse for 3 wks before bringing it back to the store. (YUCK!) How about the guy that got mad because we wouldnt let him take a riding lawn mower home and test drive it....lol. ( I work at wal-mart and I love my job)

when i worked in retail i rarely had that time luxury

although what did occasionally bother me was rude customers

i think that rude customers ought to get dunked under a water sprinkler before they leave the store - with luck they may never want to darken the doors ever again!
