This covering over heads is not only an islamic practise but covers orthodox Christianity as well. It is taken from the premise that after the fall a certain order was established being that the husband or male would be the covering of the female, not to Lord over her or be in a supreme position but as Christ humbled himself to the will of the Father although they were equal the female would wear a covering to show submission to the authority of the male leading the household, and also the Jewish males will cover there heads to show that God has authority over them as well. People can abuse this idea but if used in proper context is not a problem at all.

Women in Islam covered their head because it's GOD command and Islamic women should follow GOD the LORD command who created us .Prophet Mohammad explained for us the reason of covering their hair and also their bodies ,so women should only show their hands and feets cause all women on this earth are pretty ,their bodies are temptation for all men ,the way they talk ,walk and their hair too.even she's not beautiful maybe her hair is ,or her body is .If a woman wear a tight body what will happen to a man???women instincts are different from men ,men have more instincts than women.so wearing untight clothes will not let the man always think with the body of the woman and really who seduce a man always a woman .Also in Islam women should follow GOD commands to not see women each other naked ,so compare The Islamic nation with the Western nation how there are many lesbians !!! also men shouldn't show their bodies to the men ,they can only sow the chest and from the knees to the feets so its forbidden to see their private parts of their bodies,so isn't it a protective relegion !!!!!see how western people are liberated and aids spread so fast !!!!Islamic relegion is a protective relegion who protect women from raping ,homo sexual, lesbian and gays and he protected her from saling her body just for money .Islam gave all the rights for the woman as a human!!! Before Islam women treated as a slave and have no rights and they used to abuse her .Islam honored the woman and gave her the hospistality and tributed her .

As some people have pointed out, the wearing of the veil by women is an illogical premise to claim that women are inferior to men. It is more appropriate to indict a society of female exploitation if it tolerates pornography rather than if it enforces the veil. Given that Allah is neither male nor female, given that He does not endear people to Himself based on their gender, given that the Creator cares about all of us male or female, given that the sexual and violent drive of men is stronger than that of women...given all this, it is illogical to cast a negative light on the following injunctions contained in the Qur'an (translation),
[33:59] O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the believing women to draw their outer garments around them (when they go out or are among men). That is better in order that they may be known (to be Muslims) and not be annoyed...
[24:30-31] Say to the believing man that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that will make for greater purity for them; and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; and that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands...
On this misconception, there is a great deal more to write, most of it showing how current practices in many Muslim lands go against what the Qur'an and Sunnah have ordained, lands in which women are treated as property (unIslamic), are not educated (unIslamic), are forbidden their economic rights (unIslamic), and more. On this point in particular, we encourage everyone to consult the Qur'an and Sunnah before incriminating Islam. Always remember that Islam is a complete way of life from the Creator, and that Muslims are people who claim to follow that way of life. A Muslim may claim to follow Islam, but be wrong.

By Islamic law all women must cover their entire body only showing their face and hands.
It's for protection for women, like a shield, prevents them from entering a situation which may lead them to sin, and prevents men from the same. It's a way of setting boundries to help stop possible problems arising rather then waiting till the problem actually happens and then trying to back track.
Womens hair is considered one of her finest beauties, one of her most attractive features, something very special which is why only certain special men have the privilage of being able to see it.
Men also have to cover most of their body by Islamic law, but they don't have to cover their hair because it doesn't draw as much attention as womens hair does.
I've been an Islamic teacher for 3 years now, so if you have any other questions please feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.
I'd like to comment on some of the other answers left,
The womens Hijab, her covering, is in order for her to have freedom, it lets her travel, be out in public having a constant reminder to herself not to let herself stray and a constant reminder to others, mainly to men, that this is a woman to be treated with respect.
The Prophets wife, Khadeejah, was a very succesful business woman, she became a muslim, she covered herself, and continued to be a great business woman.
Islam came at a time when the arabs were barbarians, they treated women like possessions, like slaves, they werent allowed to be educated. Islam came and ordered both men and woman alike to be educated, Islam gave rules of how women should be treated with respect and honour in such fine details to even order men to treat their wives with extra sensitivity when they have their periods. It was custom at the time before Islam that women were chucked out of their homes at that time as they were considered unclean. Islam changed all that.
As for women being forced into marrige, that is totally forbiden by Islam, and anyone man who forces his daughter to marry someone she does not wish to marry, will be severly punished.
Adultry. If the two people who commited adultry are not married, both the man and the womans punishment is 100 lashes with a whip. If they are married and commit adultry, then their punishment is that they BOTH be stoned to death.
Their are very strict laws surrounding this matter, if they do not both confess, they only they can be punished is by having had 4 witnesses seen them actually committing adultry, and if the witnesses are found to be lying, they will be severly punished.
Islam has many many laws to make sure none of the rules are misused. Unfortunatly there doesn't not exist a righteous Islamic government to enforce these laws and many many people take advantage...such as forcing their daughters into arranged marriages, and killing their daughters if they are raped, this is all against Islam. Islam forbids it.
These people committ these sins out of their traditions, their own man made traditions, not God's law

Basically Islam hasn't contributed anything to the world in the last 1000 years. Women have to cover their heads and are denied freedom. When a woman is raped, her relatives kill her as an honor killing because she is no longer pure. They also bomb innocent Americans, other westerners, and Jews.

I am not a muslim but I think I remember this from a religions course. The muslim community claims that women cover themsleves as a form of protection. They hold women in high regard and do not want them to suffer from the dangers of men's lust. This is why they cover themselves.

Sexism.
Per that culture, men are not required to control their sexual urges. Some say that men cannot control their urges. The head covering prevents men from being distracted while in public.
So, it's up to the women to prevent their own rapes, which if one should occur, is still considered to be the woman's fault.

Christianity is not really that different. In 1 Corinthians, it states that women should wear head coverings when praying or prophesizing. Muslim women only have to wear a hijab when they are outside of their home or around males who are not related.

To answer your question, it's because it states that in the Qur'an just like it states that in the New Testament.

I am not Islamic per say, but I cover my head, not to the extent of covering all of my hair to remind me that God is above me.
For some people it is a personal choice.

Women in Islam are not really required to cover their heads. They borrow this traditions from Old Testament. This is not requirement set by God in Qur'an.
