Good grief. Maybe they'll edit their answers now, but it's amazing how many Christians didn't know Jesus's instruction to hate your parents is in the bible.

Jesus rejected his own mother and brothers, according to the bible, which is another indication that he broke this commandment.

That would be the 5th Commandment. HE does not say to hate them.

Luke 14:25  ¶And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
26  If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27  And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

What HE is saying in these verses is that we are to love GOD greater than the people we love or our own selves.

The answer can be analyzed from this:

Mark 10:29,30 Jesus said: "Truly I say to you men, No one has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for may sake and for the sake of the good news who will not get a hundredfold now in this period of time houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, with persecutions, and in the coming system of things everlasting life."

How will your family feel when you leave them for the sake of the kingdom? (sometimes) Might they feel 'hated', when you show greater love for God?

This would be in harmony with the first commandment to 'love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength.'
Mark 12:30,31.

The next commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. Therefore, God is first. This makes not a few persons unhappy with the Christians choice.

What Luke is telling you is that you must devote your whole life and soul to God, even if it costs you your family. He's not saying that you should hate your parents from the start. For example, if your sister or mother or father or aunt, uncle or cousin decides that they hate God and turn away from Him then it means you are to keep the Faith and follow God even if they do not.

Each person on earth is accountable for what they do and don't do. Sometimes our own families turn away from God. It doesn't mean that we hate them, we never do that, because God doesn't hate them. We simply must keep strong in the faith, and pray for them that are lost.

God bless,

Danny

The word hate means "love less".

Luk 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

G3404
μισέω
miseō
mis-eh'-o
From a primary word μῖσος misos (hatred); to detest (especially to persecute); by extension to love less: - hate (-ful).

Study to show thyself approved.

Because Jesus was a screwball that said one thing one day and another thing the next day. It's why nobody can make any sense out of the New Testament. Also Paul adds on a whole bunch of new stuff and who was Paul? He was also a nutcase.

He didn't mean actually hate them He was speaking in that He must come first. If there was a conflict between following Him and obeying your parents then following Him must come first. Honoring can continue for life. Obeying changes as one grows up and finds ones own way.

Come on Bible Boy, back it up! Where EXACTLY in the Bible does it say that Jesus tells us to hate our father and mother?

Translation problem- the word translated hate in that text means "not to love as much". Some greek and Hebrew words are difficult to translate into English.

This is known as a literary hyperbole. It means that we must love Jesus even more than our own family.
