Again ,I am a man who isn't much of a cook. Tonight I am going to grill bratwurst for my son and me. I thought I would simply serve them on sourdough buns with mustard, chopped onions...and maybe saurkraut. Is there anything else I should consider to make them a bit more special? Thanks.

Bratwurst and Peppers Sandwich

Sandwich Ingredients

1 pkg. hoagie or bratwurst rolls
1 pkg. sliced Swiss cheese (6-8 slices)
favorite mustard
favorite relish

Sauerkraut Topping
1-14.5 oz. can sauerkraut, drained
3/4 cup large red onion, sliced
1/2 cup sliced scallions, green part only
1-2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2-3/4 tsp. sugar to taste
1/2-3/4 tsp. garlic powder to taste
2-3 dashes favorite hot sauce

Directions;

Carefully cut lengthwise each bratwurst (only 2/3 the way through). Gently flatten for quick and easy cooking. Prepare bratwurst according to package directions in skillet. Note: Cook time will be shortened. Cook until no longer visibly pink. Place bratwurst to side keeping warm on low oven setting. Carefully drain excess liquid. Add vegetable oil and return skillet to medium-high heat setting. Add sliced red onion and green pepper, sauté for 2-5 minutes until slightly tender. Add sauerkraut and gently heat together. Add seasonings and scallions and keep warm. Add cooked bratwurst, sauerkraut and cheese on a roll. Serves 5. Refrigerate leftovers.

Just about perfection, my man. Did the same thing last Wednesday evening after coming home from work. One thing I did separately was to saute the onions on the stovetop in some butter with a little kosher salt and ground black pepper. Raw onions can sometimes be harsh and the sauteing gives them a different texture and adds flavor. Just load up the brats on the buns, add the sauted onions and mustard and eat away. Sauerkraut, do what I did. Eat two, one with and one without. Or if just having one, put the kraut on one half.

Can I come over for dinner tonight?

Tips: toast the split buns a bit and warm the saurkraut. Mustard should be German style (hot & "pebbly"). Serve with cold beer in frosty (from the freezer) glasses. Heaven.

Soak them in beer for about 45min. brown some onions and green peppers, when grilling the brats make sure you don't poke them with a fork or anything to keep them juicy
