Dachsunds were bred for digging out badgers. They can be yappy. Be sure to get a good breeder as an ill bred doxie can be agressive to other animals and people. If you get a good one there is no more loyal friend.

This answer goes for any breed of dog. There are no negatives to owning a particular breed. What you should be asking is, "What type of person am I, and what breed would suit me and my current life style"? A Dachshund was bred for hunting and going into burrows etc. However, any dog will hunt and go dig in a burrow, but a Dachshund does it best. As for the "yapping/barking". This again is a trait of this breed for when it was used for hunting. If you are not going to participate in any sort of sporting event with your Doxie, then this trait will not be used very much. However, if it does begin, you need to be near to and with your Doxie, and the moment he begins this "yapping" you can lightlty tap your doggies neck area with your fingertips while making a "tsk" noise. This will inturrupt this activity he's doing and he'll stop. As soon as he does it again, repeat the correction. The tap your are doing to his thoart area is the same corrective signal he would get from the pack leader if he were in a pack of dogs, and this activity was unacceptable. Remember, to walk your dog at least 20-30 minutes a day; this does not have to be done at one time. You can do it 10 minutes each time. This will help him to use up his energy, that will build up if he's not taken on walks. Do some research and be sure this breed is for you. Have fun with the research, and when you find a breeder, try to have a list of questions for the breeder.

There is a special type of person that it takes to raise (and love and properly care for) a Dachshund. They can have a lot of back and health problems, they can also be extremely moody and high energy. There are the upsides to having a dachshund though, they are loving, very attentive and they are usually good with kids. It really all depends on what kind of personality and health situations you are looking for and are willing to deal with....

I'm a guy, and individually, I don't like long nails. I know a lot of like very long, painted nails cause they're "so pretty", but I don't like them.

A little bit of toe nail is fine... but I agree along with you. Long nails are kinda low.

They're noisy.
They will take your things and hide them.
Don't let your dog overeat. It will get joint problems if it becomes overweight.
...and, of course, all the usual problems that go along with any dog -- you have to walk it, clean up after it, keep it company.
