Look for a breeder first. Then ask for past customers. If they were happy, take a puppy.

German Shepherds are a very prominant breed. They are black & tan, solid black, white, and sometimes even tan & white. A purebred German Shepherd has a long, almost square snout, if you will, (nose), A fairly small face when they are pups, pointed ears, as their ears will stand up at about 8 - 10 weeks old. German shepherds have a solid stance on all four feet, a long tail usually carried low unless playing or in defense. Remember to always ask to see the pup parents, and ask if they are papered. If a dog does not have papers, it is not a purebred dog!

First off you need to do alot of research on the breed. Not only to make sure this is the breed for you, but to be sure you're getting the Shepherd you want. Also visit the site, www.akc.com
When you find a breeder in your area, before commiting yourself to a pup, ask to see the pups parents. If they give you some sort of story as to why you cannot, get out of there. You should be able to see at least the mother. Get to know the breeders and see how they handle their dogs. One thing I always look for in a breeder is this... when they say to me, if for any reason at anytime you no longer can keep the pup/dog, bring it back to me. This is the sign of a good breeder and one who cares what happens to their pups. I've never gone wrong yet when they tell me this. But, they have to tell you, you don't ask them this question.
Good luck.
