During the summer I take him to the vet monthly to have them expressed. Not cheap either.

If it would save you money, then I would go ahead and do the surgery. The surgery would be more safe than if the anal glands exploded.

You can have it done but why not trigger the heart of the problem instead? Dogs have trouble (usually this isn't always true but usually) with their anal glands because of a problem with the food they are eating. Try switching foods and give your dog veggies and some raw meat on the bone like chicken. Also your vet can show you how to express the anal glands yourself. Try these alternatives before going to such a drastic solution.

Anal glands serve a purpose. Unless there is a problem with the glands, other than you being cheap, leave them alone or learn to do it yourself...

Since it's not cheap having this done all the time. Maybe you should call your vet and ask him/her about having them removed. Couldn't hurt.
