One who hates mankind as opposed to a Misogynist, one who hates women.

Moliere's Le Misanthrope ou l'Atrabilaire amoureux (first performed June 4th 1666) is now widely regarded as Molière's most refined masterpiece, the one with the highest moral content, but it was little appreciated at the time. A commercial flop in its first production, it survives as Molière's best known work today. Much of its universal appeal is due to common undercurrents of misanthropy across cultural borders.

Plot summary
This work centers on the protagonist Alceste, whose wholesale rejection of his culture's polite social conventions make him tremendously unpopular. This manifests itself in the primary conflict of the play, which results from Alceste's refusal to compliment a sonnet by Oronte, a character who lacks Alceste's respect for unabashed sincerity.

Philinte represents a foil for Alceste's moral extremism, and speaks throughout the first act of the play on the necessity of self-censorship and polite flattery to smooth over the rougher textures of a complex society.

OK There's a collection of related words you should know alongside MISANTHROPE.

MISANTHROPE: Someone who doesn't like PEOPLE.
MISOGYNIST: Someone who doesn't like WOMEN. (usually, a man)
MISANDRIST: Someone who doesn't like MEN. (usually, a woman)

Hardly anyone knows that last one. I think it's important that if you know the other two, you should know that one, as well.

The word is "Misanthropist" not Misanthrope. Misanthropist is one who hates mankind.
Opposite of this is "Philanthropist".
