I have two 12 week old Pitbull terriers, male and female, the male developed swelling around his right part of cheek almost like a cist. The female keeps nibbling at that area, could it be from the consistant nibbling or insect bite (my assumptions)? Any suggestions on how it happen and/or what type of over-the-counter medicine can be used to cure it? Thanks!

I noticed the infection yesterday, and he did have a chew bone. He's about 35 lbs. He eats, drinks water, walks normal, Stool is hard and seems to be healthy. Its just that infection that seems to be a problem of course. Thanks for the replies!

It could be a wound inside his mouth, an insect bite, a wound on the outside even! Maybe even an abcess. Take him to the vet. Dont let it get worse, there may be poison coursing thru his system and hes just a baby! Post Haste!!!

Well, it would help to know when this occurred? Also would help to know what else is going on with the pup.

I am also going to assume that you have looked inside the pups mouth and didn't see anything like a foreign object or an ulceration or injury..

Infection generally mean fever, so I would take the pups temp. Normal is 101-102. Higher than this, I would say cyst. This would need to be seen by the vet for treatment. Don't let this go, blood & brain infections are both possible.

If you have no fever and the pup is NOT showing any other weird symptoms: vomiting, diarrhea disorientation, refusing food or water. listless. unable to stand - I would say insect sting and would give the benedryl at 1 mg/lb. twice a day. But, you should see great improvement in 3 doses.

This is a young pup so things can go downhill fast. If you have any fever or this pup has been refusing water, call your vet and start driving.

He could have gotten maybe a briar or sticker in it while outside playing, or ingrown hair, or an infected scratch. It could be a number of things. One thing though, it is infected. I know because we at one time had a pup that this happend too. He may need to have it lanced, drained and giving antibiotics and medicine to put on it. Don't let this go until it breaks on it's own. You don't want your pup to become so sick that there won't be anything the vet can do. The poison can get into the blood stream. Please get him to the vet. Good luck.

was he chewing on any type of brittle bone? chicken bones splinter when dogs chew them, and it often results in what your talking about. If this is the case, you might have to take him to the vet. if not, possibly a spider / snake bite, and the swelling will probably go down in a day or so. good luck.
