The crime rate in China is very, very high compared to our Singapore. Many petty crimes and always be alert when you are in town. Cities like Guangzhou and Shen Zen, lady with handbag going into a restaurant for food, you have to tie your handbag onto your chair in case a snatch thief comes. Always watch your pocket also.

There are 3 questions here...
Answer 1: I do not know where you get the idea that people think there are no robberies or murders in China. I live in China for over 10 years and people around me are certainly aware that there are crimes happening around us in this country. However, we do agree that the crime rate in China is relatively low comparing to US and many other country.
Answer 2: No one is ignorant, only lack of information.
Answer 3: There are cover ups in sensitive cases. Just like any country, China has priorities to consider. Cases that have national economic consequences, political stability are usually investigated privately. This is normal and understandable. Most of the cases are reported to public via mass media like TV, newspapers, internet. Recently there were cases about coal mining which involved many government officials were cracked and made public. Now, I would call that transparency, not cover up.
Don't believe what other people say. Open up your eyes and ears. See and listen and you will have more information to make more accurate decisions about questions like this.

People get murdered and Robbed all over the world, in every country.
People in China are well aware that these things happen here. The state media report on sensational cases all the time. If you care to look for the information it can be found.
Hell, people in China even know there are prisons here for the rapists, and robbers, and drug dealers, and the executioner's song for the murderers and other felons.
Your question speaks more to your ignorance and those of your fellows than that of the average Chinese citizen or any person cognizant of the dangerous world in which we all live...no matter where on the planet.
What is your agenda? What brand of Agitprop are you peddling anyhow?

Of course there are many heinous crimes commited in China everyday but the media is state controlled and as such many crimes are not reported or played down significantly.
That said, I certainly feel safer in any part of China at anytime than I do in the US.
