Honestly? (I know this will irk Nikon people) Canon makes better quality lenses. PERIOD. Seriously, even the Nikon guys grudgingly admit that Canon optics are the best in the world. So why use anything else? Canon is EXPENSIVE. A decent lens can run in the thousands of dollars, and unless you are on the very high-end use (billboards, fashion print ads) you'll never notice the difference. But in the end run, you get what you pay for.
Next time you watch a sporting event (like the superbowl) on TV, look at the press pool along the side. See that sea of white lenses? The white zoom lens is a Canon trademark. There's usually only 1 or 2 black lenses (Nikon) in the whole group. Canon just shoots BETTER.

I hope that helps!

I have to agree with the other posters. I have been a Nikon man for over 30 years. In that time I have seen the Nikon brand deteriorate to the point that I would like to switch but just can't afford it. A lot has been said about how much better the Canon optics are compared to Nikon. On this point I will begrudgingly agree. I don't think the average photographer would be able to tell the difference if you did a bind test. I will say the speed of the auto focus...(something that my older eyes are beginning to appreciate)...is without a doubt better. The upper end cameras are faster, quieter, and have better hand controls.
You would never meet a more product loyal customer than me when it comes to Nikon but the repair service has really tanked. NPS was something I could count on. There was priority repair to get the cameras back into the hands of the professionals quickly. This has gone so far down hill that we don't even use it anymore. We found an authorized repair shop that will look out for us and repair the cameras quickly. And that means the cameras are really repaired. I can't tell you the number of returns to Nikon Professional Services we have had to make to get the job done right.

Sorry for going off....I love Nikon and I love my job but Nikon has made it difficult to remain loyal....and as you can tell from seeing all of those white telephotos at sporting events a lot of pros agree!
