Most religious people insist on writing their god's name as God, or in some cases G-d. This doesn't make any sense to me. It's not as though this is actually the god's name, just a categorization of rank in society. In the Jewish tradition, only the head cohen (priest) actually knows the Jewish god's real name and speaks it once a year on the most sacred ground. I could understand capitalizing that, but why the word god? Yes, we do refer to people as King X, but when not attached to the name, king is not capitalized.

I think it is done as a form of respect. Just like President is for Bush, you don't have to believe in either, to have respect for the title.

It comes from the way people spoke and wrote in the time the King James Bible was written. In those days the word God (capitazlized) referred to the one true deity and creator. The word god (lowercase) referred to someone who posessed attributes given from God, this is why the King James says believers are "gods" and Moses was a "god".
In modern English it is the name attributed to the Christian or Jewish God. For he has no name, he said He is who He is, and He is God. If there is only one, He needs no name. Other gods in contemporary times are written in their own language, such as Allah which means gid in Arabic, or the specific name such as Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu in Hinduism.

That is a special case. The word is just a noun to represent an idea. But the idea in question is very special... Unfortunately, the idea of "everything" or God is not the same for all people. The "everything" is "only one" too. We are part in it. It is the idea that deserves the most consideration for everyone that can understand... so, it is natural to write God.

boy you dont know much do you? its sad to see it. but good to see that you inquire about it at least.
GOD is not only a King! HE IS YR FATHER AND CREATOR (whether you believe or not)
If people spell "G"o d with a capital G, it has to be done like that to show "reverence and respect" we are not just talking of you or me we are talking of THE ONE THAT MADE YOU, THAT MADE ALL YOU EAT AND THAT MADE THIS PLANET AND THE UNIVERSES. YOU DONT THINK YOU SHOULD RESPECT THAT IN THE MOST REVERENT WAY?
You cannot even pronounce God's name, and are not sinless to be able to just say it. The next best thing is for an impure human to write it as God. I prefer GOD.
have more respect for God please
God is an awesome Father of all, of you and me and Jewish and Christians and God of all that you are and you see and you feel and you eat and you have to respect SUCH HUGE FIGURE even if you dont undersstand it.
Like the wind, you know its there, you cannot see it, but it exists. Same with GOD.
AND ONE HAS TO HAVE THE FAITH AND HOLD IT TIGHT AND NEVER LET GO FOR GOD TO LET US SEE MORE THAN A POOR MAN'S EYE CAN SEE.
Sincerely
...messenger from God...

when referring to the Most High, who is the one true God, we capitalize it out of respect. Jesus is God almighty, if we write god, that's just like saying it's just another word, or He is just a plain old thing. when you are writing something and you refer to someone you capitalize their name right. then what about showing respect to the Creator.

It should be capitalized when written as a name, as in
"and God said ... "
what's really weird though is the capitalization of He when referring to God.

The God of the Bible is the Only God whose name is to begin with a capital "G." That's because He is the One True God.
All others are spelled with a lower case g.

Presumably the capitalization is a designation of **T**H**E** god, not to be confused with all the other gods (a hierarchy in which Jehovah was once a member). I think it's a way of claiming exclusivity for the biblical god, like a rabid cult of fans of Steven Spielberg might refer to him as "Director" and refuse to acknowlege other directors besides his Spielbergness.

God has more than one name.....we capitalize God because that is one name He goes by. How about if everyone starts writing your name phil instead of Phil?

G-d is used by Jews, because they consider it disrespectful to write, or pronounce either that word, or the name of God.
God, for Christians, is a proper noun, and as such is capitalized.
You can use the term "god", as a synonym for "diety".
