I have an old cook book from the 1950s and some of the cake recipes call for "sour milk".

it's buttermilk. But if you don't have it you can make it with regular milk that you have on hand. Just mix 1 T. of vinegar (make sure to use WHITE vinegar) to every 1 c. of regular milk (in other words, put the 1 T. of vinegar in the measuring cup first & then the milk). Then let it set for awhile (5 min.) voila!

You can also use 1 3/4 teaspoon of cream of tartar to 1 cup of regular milk to make buttermilk, as well.

you take the needed amount of regular milk and add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to get the sour taste the recipe calls for. It is butter milk they are talking about in the old cook books
