Several years ago (15 yrs or so), I was responsible for developing employment programs for ex-offenders. Maybe surprisingly, the Army was the most strict about no criminal history. The Air force would consider felons (even serious crimes against persons) on an individual basis -- no blanket policy. Navy and Marines would consider lightweight (class 4,5,6) felons on an individual basis, but no class 1,2 or 3 -- murder, rape, armed robbery type.
But that was 15 years ago. Today? Who knew? With the sarcastic view I currently have about our Iraq involvement and the lovely press we keep generating, my sense is that the Marines might require a criminal record. Or, in the absence of one, they will give you an opportunity to create one while on duty. My apologies to all the real Marines out there, but it seems these days it is less like Semper Fi and more like Semper Why.

Any individual who has been found guilty of a criminal felony involving violent crimes or crimes of endangerment to the public--where jail or prison time was served, can pretty much give up any hope of being accepted into military service.
A few traffic tickets/moving violations or other harmless misdemeanors, I don't feel, will block an applicant from entering.

If you have too many felonies, just go and join the French Foreign Legion. Free wine with every meal, service guarantees citizenship.

Making...."a pass at your commanding officer". Quoted from Bart Simpson when trying to help Principal Skinner get out of the army.
Probably any weapon violation, but I really don't know for sure.
