A promise ring or friendship ring is a ring given to a boyfriend or girlfriend, to promise to be committed in a serious relationship. These indicate that serious courting is under-way. It can be given as a symbol that a couple does not feel that it is an appropriate time to consider engagement or marriage but are serious about each other and their relationship.
A promise ring can be worn on any finger on the left or right hand, although ring fingers are far preferred. Most often it is the left ring finger, but due to engagement confusion, the right ring finger is finding acceptance in today's world.
High school class rings (rings purchased to represent one's high school and year of graduation) are coveted by young people of either sex. "Wearing his/her class ring" means that the couple is 'going steady' and that theirs was an exclusive relationship (if the young man/woman wore a 'letter jacket' -- an overt symbol of athletic participation -- his/her girlfriend/boyfriend may be given that to show that he or she is 'taken').
Some people judge the seriousness of a promise ring by its value and by the size of its gem.
In some cultures, young adults in partnership wear 'friendship rings' as a sign of their commitment to each other. Generally speaking, however, 'promise rings' are uncommon except for the very young.
Also in some cases, but not all, a promise ring may take the place of an engagement ring in the most serious of relationships among young people. This is often because one or both of the partners are either too young to legally be wed under the law or unwilling/unable to receive legal waivers, required due to status as a minor/dependent, from their respective parents and/or guardians.
In certain religious groups, where the concept of premarital sex is shunned, a promise ring can be worn by a person to indicate that they have made a vow to put off having sex until they are married. These rings are then replaced by a true promise ring (given by the partner in the relationship), engagement ring, or wedding ring.
------------------------------------------
Promise rings are bestowed to symbolize a promise that one person makes to another. In some cases, promise rings are precursors to engagement rings. While the latter symbolize a promise to marry, promise rings can stand for many other kinds of vows.
Promise rings can mean: I will be faithful to you
Promise rings can mean: I will return to you
Promise rings can mean: I will keep a specific promise to you
Promise rings can mean: I will keep your secret
Promise rings can mean: I love you
Promise rings can mean: My intention is to marry you, but I'm not yet ready to become engaged
Promise rings can mean: I will save my virginity for you
Promise rings can mean: We are best friends
Promise rings can mean: I will always be there for you
Promise rings can mean: You are my one and only valentine
Promise rings can mean: I promise to abstain from a vice (gambling, drinking, smoking)
Promise rings can mean: I promise to replace this ring with a (larger) diamond one as soon as I can afford it
Both men and women can give promise rings.
Some promise rings do feature small diamonds, but any ring can represent a promise. If the ring is wide enough, the giver can have a names or initials engraved or a few words that summarize the promise. It's best to avoid band rings, though, which can be mistaken for wedding rings.
When giving a promise ring, it's important to communicate the specific meaning you give to it. To avoid confusion and later unhappiness, make sure the recipient understands what it symbolizes for the two of you.

A Promise ring is a ring the a guy gives you if he loves you and wants to marry you but he's too young to marry you. It's normally a little ring that looks like a teenie engagement ring but it can be any type of ring.

They're a rarity, anymore. But they're like engagement rings, except no specific time for the proposoal and/or no specific date or the wedding is set. The lady wears the promise ring, as she would an engagement ring, but not feel in a hurry. ofr course, she has to wear it and neither change her mind nor date other men.

A promise ring is like a pre-engagement ring.
If you receive a promise ring it means your boyfriend would one day, possibly like to marry you , but can't or won't do it now.
It's essentially a get out of jail free card if you want to get married and he's not ready, or you are being separated for whatever reason. IE school, work, etc.

The best kind of promise ring is a ring you choose to wear to symbolize your promise to yourself and your future husband that you will save your virginity to give him as a gift on your wedding night, and/or remain abstinent until then.
