okay, so me and this guy friend have been getting closer like each day & like each other (and i heard he's going to ask me out). well its one more week till summer school ends, and his birthday is on saturday... his 16th birthday that is. what should i get him? his friend told me get him a shirt, a videogame, money, or a giftcard. but they're all just regular-like things. haha he also told me that i should just out of a cake. but thats a little over the top. :\ any ideas?

Since I'm a dude, I always wanted money or a gift certificate to Tower Records or somewhere I could use it accompanied by a funny card. Gag gifts were funny, too.
In your situation, since it sounds like there might be some romantic possibilities, you have to consider the appropriateness of the gift, so you can do it two ways. You can give him a gift from the heart, and give it to him privately to avoid embarrassment. Or you could be more casual about it and get him a gift certificate with a funny card. It will always be appreciated.
As for jumping out of the cake, yes that is a bit over the top as well as misogynistic.
