My 8 year old cat is steadily losing hair on the front of his front legs. This has been going on for a few months and now it is completely bald. I am noticing some small patches on his back legs also. This is not near as noticable yet. What could be causing this?

We originally thought he may be rubbing the fur off due to reaching under the door to the room where the food is stored. He is an overweight cat that is on a diet per his vet. He likes to eat. The fur came off very slowly but in the last 2 or 3 weeks it has become excessive to us. We do plan to take him to a new vet here. We just moved to the area. He is given much love and attention by the whole family.

Could be ringworm or maybe fleas

There can be numerous reasons, and I am not saying that I am naming them all. One reason could be an allergy to the food that it is being fed. Another reason can be mites under the skin and your vet can do a simple scraping and put it under a microscope to check for this. It also could be due to excessive licking. Animals do this when they are bored or not stimulated enough. The licking would lead hair loss and then redness and irritation. Eventually it also could become a sore or scab. Check with your vet for a simple exam and they can probably figure it out. Try to remember when it fist started and what was going on then or what was being fed.

My parents cat did the same and she kinda looked like a goofy lion. The cat is pulling the hair out with it's teeth.
It's nervousness or a compulsive disorder.
Is there anything that could make your cat edgey? like other animals in the house? If so, is it the least dominate?
Could be fleas. Maybe his age is catching up with him and he feels just plain irritable. Pay attention to what he does at night. Sorry i can't give an exact answer but i can say i have seen it before.

It could be Fungi. Mine had it too, we had to put a medicine on for about a month (Lamisil or Dactarin). Also pills might be necessary, because it is extended now). Ask a vet. It can be transmitted to humans, but it is not serious for humans. If you see some red round spots on your skin, just put those ointments on for a couple of weeks and it'll go away.

There may be a medical condition that is causing the problem. I know it costs money, but taking him to the vet is the smart thing to do.

That happened to my boyfriends cat and all it was, was allergies. I recommend taking it to the vet, they can tell for sure. Also my boyfriends cat was about 7 when this happened, she developed the allergies throughout life.

It could be a thyroid problem. My dog had that problem as she got older. But take her to the vet to find out for sure! Good Luck!

They get allergies, and mostly to flea bites. Take it to a vet, and be sure to de-flea the whole house and the cat.

you should take it to vet first off when an animal losses its fur it could be attributed to an allergy to something it has come into contact with inside your house or outside please take to vet and help the poor little bugger.
