SS stood for Schutzstaffel which translates to 'Protective Squardron'. This particular organization was made up of three distinctive branches.
"Under the leadership of Heinrich Himmler between 1929 and 1945, the year it was disbanded, the SS grew from a small paramilitary formation to become one of the largest and most powerful organizations in Nazi Germany.
The Nazis regarded the SS as an elite unit, the Party's "praetorian guard", with all SS personnel selected on the principles of racial purity and unconditional loyalty to Führer and the Nazi Party.
The SS military branch, the Waffen-SS, evolved into a second German army in addition to the regular German army, the Wehrmacht. "

"SS" is short for "Schutzstaffel of the NSDAP (Hitler's party)" and it was a subordinate unit to the "SA" = "Schutzeinheit". In the 3rd Reich, the members of the SS were some kind of bodyguards for Hitler, but they also were the ones who commited many of the crimes during Holocaust. They were some kind of executive force for Hitler to spread his reign of terror throughout Germany and other countries.
