Ask the 3000 people who died in 9/11, the 10000 who died in Kashmir, and 1000s who die in Israel every year. They'll bloody tell you!

They say it teaches peace and love. And it does. But if you read the Koran it also teaches the following, which the zealots focus in on:
1) Islam is the only true religion. All people and cultures must convert to Islam
2) Any people or cultures that do not convert to Islam must be exterminated. People do not have the right to practice other religions.

The reason muslims say Islam is really a religion of peace is there is a lot the Koran says about peace. They kind of gloss over the parts about Islam that are more demanding and violent. But.....the zealots don't gloss over that part. Some people have said that only 1% of muslims endorse terrorism. The only problem with that is......1% of a billion is 10 million.

Depends. Religions are so vague, it's hard to tell.

For instance, Christianity can be excessively intolerant and violent (think Crusades & Inquisition, where anyone who didn't convert got burned), but it can also be a peaceful and relatively tolerant religion.

Likewise, Islam in the year 800 or so was a LOT better than now. Science, art, literature were almost exclusive to the Islamic world, while Europe was in the Middle Ages. So what happened? Inside corruption (i.e. leaders building huge palaces), Mongols, and the Crusades, followed by Europe becoming more intelligent, followed by colonialism.

So, does Islam preach hate? Sure, if you want it to.

Islam DOES NOT TEACH HATE! The root of the word Islam means 'peace.'

It's unfortunate that so many fanatics have ruined the image of Islam all over the world! This saddens me! Terrorists and those who support their actions shame themselves in this life and in the next.

The actions of terrorists are desperate - they must feel as though there is no other way - and this is a sin! If they truly believed in God they would have faith that He can change the world in the blink of an eye!

Please don't let fanatics convince you that Islam is anything other than the peaceful submission to the will of God...

Real Muslims believe that we will all be held accountable for our actions on the Day of Judgment and that killing one human being is like killing the whole of humanity!

Any belief system has the potential to be used in a hateful way. Whether it is depends on the particular groups of believers. Some will undoubtedly take things to an extreme and some will be very peaceful individuals. The problem is, no matter the belief system, people seem to be judged by the extremists.

Thank you for being brave enough to seek knowledge and truth about our religion. No matter what you read here in Answers, the only way to see the truth is to read Quran for yourself. It is blatanly obvious that the majority of the posters here have never done so, so if you did, you would be much better than they.

Islam has two stances on fighting.
-Every person has the right to defend him/herself, their family, their posessions. If someone attacks you, it is your right to fight them back.
-Not a single person has the right to be the attacker (the Quran says that God does not love the transgressors). The only time you can fight is if you are fighting an oppressor (for instance Saddam) or in self-defense. During times of war, a Muslim is strictly forbidden to fight anyone who is unarmed, anyone who is not fighting them, women, children, elderly, mentally incapacitated, and even a TREE is not to be harmed in battle. This is all in Qur'an.

Unfortunately, not all Muslims are good and not all follow what they are commanded by God to do. There are Muslims who are only Muslim by name, and who's actions speak out against Islam, and those with evil minds and ill intent. These people exist in every religion (Christianity, atheism, Judaism, Hinduism...) Islam only happens to be the biggest news at the moment.

What I'm really trying to say is don't blame Islam for what some Muslims do, blame Muslims for what they're not doing that Islam teaches them to do.

If there's any part of Islam you don't understand, never be afraid or hesitate to ask, there are many of us here who are eager to spread the *true* Islam, as opposed to the Hollywood version, and will help you to the best of our own knowledge.

And as an added, to clear out some ignorance posted here; the Qur'an never says to kill all non-Muslims or that they all must convert to Islam. In fact, the Qur'an is the only religious book you will find that says "let there be no compulsion in religion." Which basically means to never force someone to convert. It should come from the heart. In Islam, anyone is capable of attaining Heaven, not only those who carry the title of Muslim. God judges each and every one of us based on our deeds, our dedication to Him, and MOST importantly by our intentions behind those deeds. Are we giving charity because we want to abolish poverty or are we doing it so we can get our picture in the paper or our name on a plaque? Whether we're Muslim or Christian or atheist or pagan, only God knows how much knowledge a person carries about Him and how they understand Him. Even if he shouts "there is no God," they would still be capable of forgiveness because God knows just how much information of Him (true or false) that he was taught.

Every religion has its fanatics, unfortunately. Islam, like most religions, is essentially peaceful. Unfortunately there are always going to be some lunatics who skew the message for their own purposes. It would just as fair to claim Christianity is a violent religion because of the KKK or the Spanish Inquisition. You cannot blame an essentially peace-fostering religion for the nutcases who commit atrocities in its name.

It doesn't teach hate, but not all bits of the Qu'ran are that peaceful. Terrorists are not following the teachings of the Qu'ran; many Muslims don't even consider them to be Muslims. Read the Qu'ran - that's the way you'll truly know. Some of it is quite scary, though.
