Did you check the surrounding areas? Will you have a rental car or will you be using public transportation? Either one, check the Crystal City area (right by National Airport) and Arlington; check Bethesda, Greenbelt, College Park, Silver Spring, Alexandria. There are Metro (subway) stations in all these places. It is very easy to take the Metro downtown to the convention center. Most hotels have shuttles to the Metro stations.
It's hot as hell here, so dress lightly. :-)

Definitely check surounding cities. I stayed in Crystal City & it's pretty nice, there's plenty to chose from over there. And it's close to actual DC so you won't have to get up extremely early!
