Standing and putting your hand over your heart is a sign of respect for the flag, not the anthem. Many times you will see the flag at the same time that you hear the anthem, so this causes the confusion. There is no proper posture for the anthem.

American Citizens should stand and place their right hand over their heart, or remove their hat and place that over their heart. Military personell salute and keep their hats on.
Non Citizens and Jehovah's Witness should stand and be respectful but are not required to salute or place anything over thier hearts.
Remember, whether or not you like the president or think he's a crook, this is still the USA and we LOVE this place. If you don't feel some love for your country (which is vastly different from it's government) then at least be respectful and get your butt out of your seat, stand still, and keep quiet.

What you may be seeing are people standing at attention. Which is ok to do, but what most are taught is to put the hand over the heart if not wearing a hat. If wearing a hat, remove and cover the heart with it. If in uniform, face the flag and salute.

You don't necessarily need to have your hand over your heart, but it is proper, and respectful to at least stand. There is no real "correct posture."

Stand, remove your hat, place your right hand over your heart -and sing or recite together.
If you're loyal to your country & love it, willing to die for it, then show it some respect, dammit!

If you are not an American citizen, should you be required to swear fealty while visiting?
What if we went to another country and were presented with the same problem?
