Depends on the county you work for.
In cook county, which is in Illinois, starting salary is roughly 36-38 thousand. It goes up by about 2-6 thousand after the first year, and then it's based on performance, budget and other factors.
The only draw back is, you need to have at minimum 40 college credit hours.

It depends on the state, and the county in the state,
It can be a part time job in some areas, it may pay 20,000 or so with no benifits, to 40,000 ( about top I know of in areas I have lived)
