Not only are they exaggerating it, they are helping it.
They lied about the plane that hit the pentagon, Why?
They won't release any footage of the pentagon crash, except one security camera that saw the plane in one frame, (Clearly showing that it was definitely no 737.)
The others (The one of the highway. The I-5 I think, not sure.) And the gas station security cam were both taken and never released to the public. Why?
There is all sorts of conspiracy theory, I don't necessarily believe that our government planned the attacks and all that jazz. But I have no problem thinking they took advantage of it.
The patriot act was written well before 9/11.
Also, on an episode of that crazy x-files spin off show, they had the same plot in it. About 2 years before 9/11 occurred.
The only difference between a terrorist and a criminal is that the government can take away more rights by calling them terrorists.
No matter how many rights we give the government, they cannot protect you from terrorists. It just can't work.
It's like police. Sure they put criminals in jail, but that's after the crime happened. The police cannot protect you either. If someone really wants to kill you, You will either kill or be killed. Period.
Oh and about my initial statement about them helping it.
They also help it rather intensely by keeping drugs illegal. They have created a black market that allows criminals/terrorists to make large sums of money that is untraceable, nontaxable and worst of all, going out of America simply because people have this strange belief that making something illegal stops it.
Do not try to solve through legislation that which is a social problem. It does not, and can not work.

Very likely.
It's a bit of classic deception. Make vague allegations about "plots" to attack the US. Arrest various marginal types and charge them with complicity in the "plots", try them in secret courts, or without open evidence being used for reasons of "national security". Then point to these cases as evidence of the "plots" that threaten the USA and it's friends.
Consider the recent arrests of "conspirators" in both the US and Canada as an example. There appears to have been a few people, chatting on open Internet lists, about how they wanted to "do something", the government sent in agents-provocateur to stir these people up, and help them acquire "terrorist supplies" (in the Canadian case, the actual evidence included such suspicious things as boots and a barbecue) which they probably would have no idea or desire to acquire without the government agents being involved. They were then arrested and charged with conspiracy.... when it is far from clear what they would have done if left alone.
By stirring up the media and the public, the government can get people to accept almost anything it wants; those who oppose the demands of the government are labeled as "soft on terrorism" (whatever that means) and as possible traitors themselves. Fear spreads, the media get more stirred up, and we move to a higher and less rational level of paranoia.

You're asking this after we've been attacked twice, and we're uncovering plots to blow up the tunnels in NYC? Before 9/11 people were arrested for plotting to blow up the bridges and tunnels as well. How many plots against this country will it take to get you nervous? How many people have to be put in danger or have to die in order for you not to feel duped? Visit NYC, and take a look at the gaping hole in the skyline of my beloved city and tell me that we're being paranoid about terrorism. You're delusional.

while i believe we needed to do SOMETHING to find the people behind the 9/11 attacks, I don't feel we should have been misled to enter a war in Iraq over weapons of mass destruction that were never found.

Most likely that is partially true. I think they are using the terror war to reduce or eliminate our rights to keep more information on us and to watch our every move.

One thing for sure is that they are effectively using it as a "smoke screen" for all their short-comings, so that we are off balance and ill-prepared to question their highly "irregular" decisions & initiatives. Our "decider," Gee Dubya, as perfected the administration's "slight of hand"... did you hear him address questions in Germany? All of Europe must be shaking their heads in disbelief... "This man heads up the stongest nation on the planet...UNBELIEVABLE! It's GOT to be an act." Part of myself is still in a state of DENIAL... "It can't be... it CAN"T be.... it can't be...(ad infinitum)."

well, I don't know if reacting to terrorist attacks on New York City is exaggerating. I guess it just depends on your point of view and whether or not you give a **** about anything but yourself.
